Jack Daniel’s to celebrate Jack’s Birthday
Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands is planning a raft of activities in the on-trade for Jack Daniel’s whiskey as part of its annual celebration of Jack’s Birthday. The brand has partnered with key bars and pubs to deliver activities throughout September, including VIP parties and exclusive Birthday gigs in outlets. They will also feature price promotions, sampling of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey to staff and other tools to increase visibility of the brand and help drive footfall.

Bar Sport expands with new Essex site
A new site is planned for the expanding Bar Sport group in Braintree in Essex, bringing a large closed-down pub back to life. The former Silkworm is to be transformed into the American-style sports bar and grill concept (pictured) through a franchise agreement. It closed last October after operator Bramwell Pub Company went into administration. The 7,590 sq ft site was let on a new free-of-tie lease on behalf of Roseland Finance Company in a deal secured by leisure property specialist Davis Coffer Lyons.

New rums and forums at trade event
Details have been announced for the annual Boutique RumFest, the event for the bar and drinks trade linked to consumer show RumFest. This year, the trade-only event will be at London’s ILEC Centre on Friday October 10 – the day before RumFest itself takes over ILEC on October 11 and 12. Run in association with bottle products company Cork Supply, it will showcase new rums and newly emerged distilleries and feature specialist rum forums with some of the world’s top experts.

Foundation Inns unveils new bar concept
Managed pub operator Foundation Inns has launched a new craft beer bar and smokehouse/grill concept called Craft & Grill. Opening this week in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey, it is the company’s first branded site, with plans to roll it out to further locations in the London suburbs and Home County towns if it proves a hit. Formerly restaurant and pub The Noble Vine, the site has a stripped-down, informal feel, with a bar offering over 30 craft beers as well as an upgraded coffee offering, bourbons and cocktails.

Edinburgh launch for navy-strength gin
The team behind Edinburgh Gin are to launch a new navy-strength gin, Cannonball, debuting exclusively at Edinburgh gin bar Heads & Tales. At 57.2% ABV, it has a strong, punchy taste and is very juniper forward with back notes of its Szechwan pepper botanical.

Heineken bottles celebrate world cities
A new design has been unveiled for 33cl bottles of Heineken beer in the latest phase of the brand’s campaign to “Open Your City” that encourages consumers to break out of their local neighbourhood and explore new bar, pubs and clubs. The new City Edition suite of bottles carries the name of different “progressive” cities in the world: Amsterdam, Berlin, London, New York, Rio De Janeiro and Shanghai.

More London sites for Pilsner Urquell tank beer
Czech brewer Pilsner Urquell is set to install more tanks in central London pubs and bars for serving its beer as fresh as possible, including the Draft House in the City. Delivered by a special tanker directly from the brewery in Plzen, the beer is pumped into specially crafted copper tanks which are installed and on display in the pub. It follows the success of “tankovna” beer at The White Horse in Parsons Green, south-west London.

Coors Light plans pop-up Ice Bars
Ice bars are to be built in Manchester and London as part of a major new campaign to promote Coors Light as “ice-cold refreshment”. The ice-themed venues will run for seven nights in London in December and for seven nights in Manchester in March next year. They will both host an intimate gig with Brit Award-winning band Rudimental. Aimed at people aged 18 to 34, the ice bars aim to bring to life a new integrated marketing campaign for Coors Light, led by a TV ad featuring celebrity brand ambassador Jean Claude Van Damme.

Cocktails and cuisine at creative new bar
A new bar has been opened in east London as part of a space for creative businesses developed out of an abandoned 1960s commercial laundry. The Laundry Canteen & Bar houses a British brasserie and cocktail bar, open seven days a week offering breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner as well as inventive drinks. It is made up of a courtyard, a lounge area and a more formal dining area.

Sales stable but profits down at Pernod Ricard
Pernod Ricard has today report that sales across the global drinks group were “broadly stable” at €7,945million (£6,235million) in the year to June 30 but were “adversely affected” by a 23% decline in China. However, sales in Europe, including the UK, showed a marked improvement of 2%. Group profit from recurring operations was down 8% to €2,056million (£1,638million). Its brands include Chivas Regal, Absolut, Beefeater, Jameson, Havana Club and Perrier-Jouët.

Brewer celebrates Tour of Britain cycle race
Box Steam Brewery is launching a new beer to celebrate the Tour of Britain as it passes close to the Wiltshire brewery next month. Well Oiled is a 5.5% ABV blonde golden British IPA with a fresh, hoppy floral aroma. It is full flavoured with an essence of tropical fruits, zesty orange undertones, and a crisp, lingering finish with grapefruit notes. This year’s Tour of Britain takes place from September 7 to 14, with nine stages of racing by more than 100 top international cyclists, passing through Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire.

New chairman announced for SLTA
Donald Campbell, sales director at wine and spirit supplier Inverarity Morton, has been announced as the new chairman of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association (SLTA). He will succeed outgoing chairman Peter Lederer at the SLTA Chairman’s Lunch on November 19. Donald has a career spanning nearly 35 years in the licensed trade.

New-look student pub for Plymouth
Stonegate Pub Company is relaunching The Roundabout in Plymouth as one of its new-look student pubs after a £250,000 investment this week. It will have a wide choice of craft beers, super-fast broadband and interactive digital entertainment alongside student-friendly offers. Opening daily from 8am, it will include a coffee shop-style grab-and-go counter serving tea, coffee, snacks and pastries to eat in or take-away.
