Auchentoshan reveals American bar for Switch
The organisers of the Auchentoshan Switch competition have announced the North American bar where the winning bartender from Europe including the UK will get to work. As part of an expenses-paid trip, the winner will switch continents for two weeks to work in Employees Only in New York City. Auchentoshan Switch challenges bartenders to create a cocktail with Auchentoshan Three Wood whisky.

Heineken offers free cab rides
Drinkers are being encouraged to explore bars and pubs across London through a campaign by Heineken offering free cab rides. Anyone who buys a pint of Heineken on the first Saturday of each month in a participating venue receives a free branded wallet that encourages them to take part. They enter their details and location via the web for a chance to win a free Star Cab journey across London to another venue.

USA wins Diageo Reserve World Class
Charles Joly from The Aviary in Chicago has been declared the winner of this year’s Diageo Reserve World Class bartender of the year competition. Representing the USA, he beat 47 other bartenders in a week of challenges held in Scotland and London for this year’s global final. Diageo also announced that the World Class global final will be in Cape Town in 2015, taking it to Africa for the first time.

Expansion for Caribbean rum campaign
The Authentic Caribbean Rum (ACR) initiative has expanded the range of rums that it promotes as part of its ACR Marque badge of quality and provenance. Hampden Estate Gold, Monymusk Plantation Special Reserve and Westerhall Vintage have joined the portfolio of participating rums, bringing the total up to 18 companies.

Challenge to twist classic Gin Cocktail
Bartenders are being invited to create an “English garden twist” on the classic Gin Cocktail created by legendary bartender Jerry Thomas in a competition for No 3 London Dry Gin. It is being run by Maxxium UK, distributor of Berry Bros & Rudd’s premium gin, and ties in with the brand’s summer residency with The Gin Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London.

Bristol craft beer bar creates pop-up
A pop-up version of Bristol craft beer bar Beerd has been opened by brewer Bath Ales in the city’s Clifton Village. Based in the former Havana Café site, the bar is open for eight weeks until September and offers a wide range of different styles of Beerd beers.

Italian wine-makers to open UK bar
The Frescobaldi family, one of Italy’s oldest and most respected wine dynasties, are to open their first stand-alone restaurant and wine bar in the UK. Called Frescobaldi, it is due to launch this autumn in London’s Mayfair.

Coca-Cola brings campaign to on-trade
Coca-Cola’s successful off-trade marketing campaign that puts people’s names on bottles is returning to bars, pubs and clubs. Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) is running the “Share a Coke” campaign until September, replacing the logo with “Mate” on original Coke bottles, “Bestie” on Diet Coke bottles and “Dude” on Coke Zero bottles.

Belushi’s adds mobile phone ordering
Leading operator Beds & Bars has introduced mobile phone ordering for its customers, helping to cut queues at the bar at its Belushi’s site in Newquay in Cornwall. It has partnered with mobile ordering app Orderella which allows people to order and pay for their drinks and food using their smartphones.

Finalists for Indie Beer Can Festival
The 12 finalists have been revealed for Britain’s first competition to find the best beers in cans from independent brewers in the UK and Ireland. They include brews from Adnams, Arbor Ales, Bateman’s, Blacks of Kinsale, Butcombe, Concrete Cow, Fyne Ales, Purity, Springhead, Thwaites, Wadworth, and Windsor & Eton.

Bombay Sapphire pops up at luxury hotel
A pop-up bar has been created for Bombay Sapphire gin at the luxury Rosewood London hotel in Holborn, celebrating the gin and tonic and the brand’s exotic botanicals. The Bombay Sapphire Ultimate Gin & Tonic Terrace runs until August 29.

Pubco agrees coffee supply deal
Lessees with Star Pubs & Bars can tap into a new arrangement with coffee roaster Kimbo which is said to change “the dynamic of coffee supply in the leased pub and licensed sector”. The exclusive agreement guarantees credit for lessees, offers coffee training and ongoing support and allows them to terminate their agreement without penalties.

Final release in devilish whisky trilogy
The final instalment in Isle of Arran Distillers’ trilogy of Devil’s Punch Bowl whiskies is set to be released, with the choice of woods giving a unique deep flavour. Chapter III: the Fiendish Finale is a multi-age blend matured in oloroso sherry butts and French oak barrique casks.

Rum and cocktail brands on London beach
Beach huts, sand, end-of-the-pier amusements, ping-pong and rum cocktails have popped up at the Roundhouse entertainment venue in north London with the launch of Camden Beach. For drinks, it has partnered with Coco Re’al Cream of Coconut and Finest Call fruit-infused cocktail syrups and purees as well as navy rum Pusser’s.

Brothers take cider on tractor tour
A tractor staffed by four “model” brothers is touring cities and universities around England to deliver a “taste of Somerset” and samples of Brothers Cider. The travelling bar, with a full-size Brothers-branded tractor, will travel to Notting Hill Carnival in west London, Lincoln, Plymouth, Southampton, Warwick and High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.

World Cup boosts AB InBev in UK
AB InBev performed strongly in the UK thanks to the World Cup, according to figures for the half year to June 30. AB InBev UK’s products grew by 13.5% in the last quarter and by 8.1% over the six months. The strong performance of Budweiser was supported by its position as official beer sponsor of the World Cup which included a limited-edition gold aluminium bottle featuring the tournament’s trophy. Stella Artois increased market share and volume, boosted by being the official beer and cider of The Open Championship and official beer supplier for the Wimbledon Championships.

Frobishers extends range at La Tasca
Strong sales of premium juice brand Frobishers at La Tasca restaurants have prompted the group to add a further Frobishers flavour to its soft drinks portfolio, cherry. The Spanish restaurants have stocked a selection of Frobishers premium juices, including apple, orange and the full Fusion juice drink range, for the last four years.
