Savoy bartender collaborates on whisky cocktails
Tom Walker (pictured) of The American Bar at The Savoy in London has collaborated with Scotch whisky Dewar’s to create “heritage” cocktail recipes with a contemporary twist. He has come up with the Dewar’s True Scotch collection of cocktails for serving in the hotel bar and for other bartenders and consumers to re-create. He researched classic recipes which could be made with Dewar’s and adapted with modern ingredients, techniques and garnishes.

New domain name attracts bars and brands
Bars and drinks brands are starting to snap up the new domain name of .bar after it went live this week. Companies purchasing the new URL endings range from Spirit Pub Company for its Taylor Walker and John Barras pubs to drinks brands including Chambord, Southern Comfort, Woodford Reserve, Herradura, Jack Daniel’s, Miller Genuine Draft, Rémy Martin Louis XIII Cognac, Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot, Aperol and Campari.

Three Glasgow clubs put up for sale
A Glasgow venue made up of three nightclubs has been put up for sale through property specialist Christie + Co. Cirque, Massa and The Cellar Door in Queen Street in the Merchant City area is on the market despite trading well and having potential for further growth. Stretching over ground and basement levels, the venue has been split into three separate operations but they can be re-connected.

Operator turns to ‘peer-to-business’ loans
Pub group Electric Star has turned to peer-to-business lender Rebuildingsociety to help it develop its fourth site. It is to open The Jackdaw and Star in Homerton, east London, later this summer after receiving a £43,000 loan to cover the cost of the refurbishment. Rebuildingsociety works by allowing hundreds of individual lenders to pledge varying amounts towards a loan request posted on its website. It administers monthly capital and interest repayments on behalf of its borrowers.

Luminar invests in Cameo for Guildford
The Luminar Group is investing £300,000 in converting a club in Guildford, Surrey, into a “luxurious, aspirational” new nightclub. The former Dusk in North Street is to be relaunched as Cameo on August 16, aimed at the over-21s and creating 35 new jobs. It will include the creation of a stylish new dance room, six pre-bookable private booths, a women’s pamper area and VIP booths.

Bartenders ‘sprint to the finish’ for games
St Lucia Distillers, based in one of the countries of the Commonwealth, has organised a cocktail competition for Chairman’s Reserve rum in Scotland that ties in with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. With its UK distributor Emporia Brands, it has invited bartenders from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen to take part in the “Sprint to the Finish” challenge, for a chance to go to the 100m finals at Hampden Park on Monday July 28. Via the competition’s Facebook page, the cocktail with the most “likes” by today (July 24) will win.

Craft beer festival heads for Glasgow
The success of the Craft Beer Rising festival in London has led to it being extended this year to Scotland. Featuring craft beer, street food and music under one roof, it will take place at Drygate Brewing Co in Glasgow from September 19 to 21. It will have four sessions for the public plus one specifically for the trade.
