Cinema-inspired bar to open in Nottingham

Audacity Leisure is breathing new life into one of Nottingham’s landmark buildings by creating a new bar and live music venue. It plans to open Das Kino in September in what was once The Old Vic in Fletcher Gate, offering premium cocktails, handmade pizza, ping-pong and live music under one roof.

Eclectic plans tiki bar for Liverpool
Bar operator Eclectic is to develop a new site in Liverpool for its tiki concept Lola Lo (pictured). It has signed an agreement to lease on an undisclosed site which it hopes to develop into the new venue by June 2015. It has also reported trading for the 12 months to the end of June was “in line with the board’s and the market’s expectations” and announced the promotion of operations director Lee Nicolson to the board as chief operating officer.

Diageo names 16 for World Class global final
The 16 finalists to go through to the next stage of the global final of Diageo’s World Class bartender competition were announced last night. After three days in Scotland and London, the judges chose which of the 48 global finalists had scored most highly on the challenges so far. UK winner James Fowler of The Larder House in Bournemouth was not among the 16.

Bars serve past World Class finalists’ cocktails
Past finalists of Diageo’s World Class competition have created Tanqueray No Ten cocktails for serving at top London bars such as Milk & Honey, City Social and Vista. The “Perfect Ten” cocktails have been devised by bartenders Nathan O’Neill, Gareth Evans, Ladislav Piljar, Tim Homewood and Monica Berg.

Second bar for Glasgow’s West Brewery
The team behind Glasgow’s West Brewery are investing in a second bar in the West End of the city. They have taken on the former site of The Halt bar in Woodlands Road and have temporarily converted it into a pop-up bar called Pop Up West.

Belvedere and gallery open Martini experience
An interactive visitor experience is being created at the Royal Academy in London for super-premium vodka Belvedere to take people through the evolution of the Martini cocktail. It looks at some of the “legends” associated with its history, from Elizabeth Taylor, Ernest Hemingway and Kate Moss to James Bond. Opening tomorrow, it runs throughout August.

Courvoisier names most spontaneous bartenders
A team from London’s Milk & Honey bar were declared the UK’s most spontaneous bartenders after winning a competition with Courvoisier cognac. Darren Leaney and Stephen Tarr triumphed in a challenge where they had to create a cocktail against the clock using ingredients from a mystery hamper.

New look for Edinburgh’s Aperol Spritz bar
The Aperol Spritz pop-up bar is returning to Edinburgh for the Festival Fringe for a third year, with a new look and a move from its previous location of George Street to St Andrew Square. Running from today to August 25, it ties in with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Hendrick’s heads for Edinburgh fringe
Hendrick’s Carnival of Knowledge, a travelling parlour of enlightenment and gin, is returning to Edinburgh for this year’s Festival Fringe. It will be at One Royal Circus – a Georgian house overlooking Royal Circus Gardens – from August 7 to 10, with a cocktail bar and a schedule of gin-related scientific, historic and literary presentations.

London bar adds carbonised cocktails on tap
Carbonised cocktails, served from a Cornelius beer keg nicknamed the Village Fountain, have been added at Village East in London. The cocktail will be changed weekly based on seasonal ingredients. The bar has also introduced cocktails aged in glass jars with added oak staves.

Commonwealth Cocktail uses 71 ingredients
Leading bartender Mal Spence from the Kelvingrove Café in Glasgow created a cocktail using 71 ingredients to represent the nations competing in the Commonwealth Games. He teamed up with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau to create the commemorative Scotch-based drink.

Haywood Drinks adds bar pot snacks
A new line of packaged bar pot snacks has been launched by Haywood Drinks. The Sun Valley pots include Chilli Bar Mix, Wasabi Nuts, Caramelised Onion Nut Mix, Jumbo Salted Peanuts, Dry Roasted Peanuts, Black Pepper Jumbo Cashews and roasted and salted Pistachios.

The nominees have been announced for the 2014 London Lifestyle Awards, which are voted on by members of the public. Categories include best bar, club, restaurant, members club and hospitality group. Click here to vote.

Diageo GB reports ‘modest growth’ for year
Drinks giant Diageo has reported “modest growth” in Great Britain, with net sales growing by 2% in the year to June 30. Baileys saw top-line growth of 8% while the premium Reserve Brands portfolio was up 29%, driven by Talisker whisky and luxury vodka Ciroc which more than doubled in size in the UK. Smirnoff net sales declined but the brand saw gains in volume and value share. Johnnie Walker whiskies grew in GB, boosted by the “Johnnie and Ginger” serve, while Captain Morgan rum continued to perform well in GB, growing 13%. Globally, Diageo was hit by emerging markets including China, reporting an 8.5% fall in sales to £13.98billion and a 9% drop in pre-tax profit before exceptional items to £2.7billion.

New head of sales for Revolution bookings
Inventive Bar Company, which operates Revolution bars, has appointed Mandy Higgins to the new position of head of sales, responsible for the continued growth of pre-booked sales at the group’s sites, which are currently enjoying 19% year-on-year growth. She joins from sports and fitness provider David Lloyd Leisure Group where she was regional sales manager.

Gloworm grows with new appointment
Mixer brand Gloworm Drinks has appointed Richard Porter as business development controller. He was previously director of national accounts at Carlsberg and director of sales at Allied Domecq UK. He aims to open up new opportunities for Gloworm in the on-trade, including the direction of the growing sales team and developing the brand’s routes to market.

New F&B manager for W London
Robert Wattie has been appointed beverage and food manager for W London hotel in Leicester Square, including responsibility for its lounge bar and late-night Wyld Bar which are run by bar and club operator Ignite Group. After starting in the kitchen at London’s Dorchester hotel, Robert has worked at The Savoy, the Four Seasons hotels in Vancouver and the Bahamas, One Aldwych in London and The Goodwood Park Hotel in Chichester. He was most recently food and beverage manager at The Royal Automobile Club in London.

Fewer drinking carbonated soft drinks
One in four consumers are drinking fewer carbonated soft drinks than they were six months ago, according to a new report from research group Mintel. The biggest fall was among people aged 16 to 24 where one in three are drinking fewer of the drinks. Of those consuming less, 50% said it was because they contained too much sugar.

Refurbishment for York student bar
Stonegate Pub Company has invested £305,000 in refurbishing student bar The Graduate in Lendal, York, which is due to reopen on August 14. Its offering will include a coffee shop-style grab-and-go counter serving tea, coffee, snacks and pastries from 8am plus interactive digital entertainment, a wide choice of craft beers, free super-fast broadband, USB ports and plug sockets at tables and free access to a wifi-linked printer.

Healeys sponsors surf and music festival
Cornish cider company Healeys has signed a two-year sponsorship deal with the UK’s largest surf and music festival, Boardmasters, which takes place on August 6 to 10. Last year, its Rattler 4% cider was launched at the festival where it sold 65,000 pints. Rattler 4% will be served across both the Fistral and Watergate Bay sites at Boardmasters while the full Rattler range will be on tap at the official Rattler bar at Watergate Bay.
