Profits soar at expanding BrewDog
Brewer and bar operator BrewDog has reported a 383% jump in profits on the back of investment in expanding its craft beer bars. Net profit reached over £2.3million in 2013 while annual turnover was up 70% to £18millon. It plans a further seven BrewDog bars this year including Dundee, Liverpool and Battersea in south London as well as Rome.

Stoli nurtures budding bartenders
An online programme for educating budding bartenders and fostering talent has been launched by Stolichnaya vodka. Focusing on working with vodka, “Start With Stoli” features online workshops, interviews with leading professionals and cocktail recipes. After completing the programme, bartenders can submit their own unique cocktail for a chance to win a “Bartender’s Dream Library”.

Hotel bar creates own Old Tom gin
A gin has been developed for The Bar at The Dorchester in London, created by its legendary bar manager Giuliano Morandin. He worked with distiller Jonathan Clark of City of London Distillery to create an Old Tom gin – the sweeter style that is well suited to classic cocktails such as a Martinez and a Tom Collins.

ALMR unveils modern new logo
A modern new logo has been unveiled by the trade body for the bar, pub and club industry, aiming to promote a “fresh, progressive” image for licensed hospitality. The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers made the move after merging with the late-night operators’ body BEDA two years ago and adding more members in the late-night and casual dining sectors.

Glen Garioch fully matured in wine cask
The first-ever Glen Garioch whisky to be fully matured in French Bordeaux red wine casks has been released. Rather than using ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks, it has added a touch of elegance to the rich, fruity, spicy Highland character that is Glen Garioch’s house style.

Licor 43 partners bars for Tour de France
Bars in Yorkshire will be marking the arrival of the Tour de France cycle race in July with serves made with Licor 43 as part of a calendar of on-trade events for the Spanish liqueur this summer. Participating venues include the Yorkshire Hotel in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and Bierkeller in Leeds.

Dirty Martini adds vinegar twist
Bartenders at London’s Dirty Martini bars have picked up on one of the latest trends by introducing cocktails containing vinegar. The drinks are made with “shrubs” – vinegar-based syrups infused with fruits and spices.

Champagne brand partners London theatre
Champagne Canard-Duchêne is returning for a second year as official champagne partner of Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Theatre-goers can enjoy Canard-Duchêne at the theatre’s bar, with Cuvée Léonie Brut NV available by the glass and bottle and Cuvée Léonie Green NV and Grande Cuvée Charles VII Rosé by the bottle.

New bitters capture fresh flavours
A new range of cocktail bitters has been launched by Maverick Drinks, made through rapid maceration to capture fresh flavours and finished in a high-tech centrifuge. Bitter Bastards comprises 25 single-botanical bitters, from Black Pepper and White Truffle to Sweet Orange and Naga Chilli.

Winner announced for 2014 Galvin Cup
Adam Lahham from Scarfe’s Bar at Rosewood London hotel is the winner of this year’s Galvin Cup. Held at Steam & Rye in the City of London, the bartender competition is now in its eighth year, created by Fred Sirieix, general manager of London bar and restaurant Galvin at Windows, and its chef patron Chris Galvin. This year’s competition featured Bowmore whisky.

UK bartender triumphs with Havana Club
Andy Loudon from Satan’s Whiskers in east London has been announced as winner of the global final of this year’s Havana Club Cocktail Grand Prix held in Cuba. The runner-up was Indika Silva from Germany while third place went to Alessandro Palumbo from the Cayman Islands. In fourth was Danil Nevsky, formerly at Aberdeen bar Orchid and now at Tales & Spirits in Amsterdam.

Bibendum takes on bottled Beerd ales
West Country brewer Bath Ales has secured a deal with drinks supplier Bibendum to distribute its craft beer brand, Beerd. It gives Bibendum exclusive distribution for the bottled versions of two popular Beerd beers, Silvertip and Monocle, and begins immediately. It is the first time that Beerd Brewery has bottled Silvertip or Monocle since they were first brewed in 2013.

Sky adds European football channel
Sky has announced the launch of the first-ever television channel dedicated to European football which will be available to Sky Sports commercial customers from August 12 as part of their existing subscription. The new channel Sky Sports 5 will screen over 600 live European football matches next season, including Uefa Euro 2016 qualifiers, Uefa Champions League, La Liga, Eredevisie and Copa del Rey, and will feature European football programmes such as Revista De La Liga and Champions League Weekly.
