Jose Cuervo to introduce blanco Tradicional in UK
Proximo Spirits is to introduce Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver into the UK for the first time – a 100% agave blanco tequila. Due to launch into the on-trade in early July, it was previously only available in Mexico and the US. It is an unrested version of Jose Cuervo Tradicional Reposado, with a fresh, spicy flavour and a hint of sweetness to finish.

Funkin embarks on spritzer mix activity
Cocktail mix specialist Funkin has begun promoting its products for combining with sparkling wines to create spritzers. Launched in the US in 2012, the FunkinSpritzers concept creates refreshing cocktails by using mixers such as Funkin Strawberry Woo Woo. For the new activity in the UK, it has partnered wine company Pernod Ricard UK to promote a Strawberry Spritzer (pictured) made with Jacob’s Creek Moscato and Funkin Strawberry Daiquiri.

Peroni creates stylish pop-up with beer cocktails
Beer cocktails will feature as part of a stylish Peroni bar due to pop up this summer on the outdoor terrace of London rooftop bar Skylounge. It opens on July 3 and will run to October, open from 11am daily until midnight. It will also feature Peroni Nastro Azzurro’s new 250ml Piccola bottles which were launched in May.

Bacardi launches search for legacy bartender
The search has begun to find the next bartender who can create a cocktail that can stand the test of time as part of the Bacardi “legacy”. Bacardi is calling for entries to its Legacy Cocktail Competition, now in its sixth year, by July 31 for regional heats in August. The UK final in September will select three “most promising” bartenders to spend six months marketing their drinks. This year, they can use Bacardi Gold as well as Bacardi Superior.

Stonegate invests in Slug and Lettuce bars
Stonegate Pub Company has invested further in its Slug and Lettuce bars with a refurbishment and new site. It has spent £250,000 in revamping the Slug and Lettuce in High Street, Beckenham, in south-east London which is due to re-open on Saturday (June 28). It has also invested in transforming a former Cape bar and restaurant into a Slug and Lettuce in Wood Street in the City of London, which will open on Tuesday July 1.

Geranium Gin releases higher-ABV bottling
A higher-strength version of Geranium Gin, made with the aromatic botanical of geraniums, is being released to mark the brand’s fifth anniversary. Only 5,000 bottles have been produced of Geranium Gin 55 which has an ABV of 55%.

Winner announced in women-only competition
Clotilde Lataille of Hawksmoor Spitalfields Bar in London has won the UK Speed Rack competition for female bartenders. Based on the successful competition created in the US, it attracted some of the UK’s top bartenders and also raised money to fight breast cancer.

Sales and profits up at whisky distiller
Whisky-maker Isle of Arran Distillers has reported record results with turnover up 25% in its end-of-year accounts for 2013. It also achieved a net profits increase of nearly 60% in what was its best-ever year. Growth has come principally from export sales – which rose 26% last year – but gains were also made in the UK. The business reported growing sales of the core range as well as increased demand for limited-edition bottlings such as the Arran Malt 16 Year Old.

BrewDog opens new bar in Florence
Scotland’s BrewDog officially opens the doors of its latest BrewDog bar in Florence today (June 26) – its first craft beer bar in Italy and 19th worldwide. Housed in a building once owned by the Medici family during the Renaissance, it is BrewDog’s fourth international bar launch of 2014 after openings in São Paulo in Brazil, Tokyo and Gothenburg in Sweden. The brewery plans to open bars in Rome and Bologna later this year.

New global campaign for Glenfiddich
A global £2million advertising campaign has been launched for single malt whisky Glenfiddich, with the strapline of “Family Run Since 1887”. In the UK, it incorporates major outdoor advertising, PR and targeted website activity as well as national newspapers such as The Independent for the rest of the year.

No 3 Gin works on Kew Gardens pop-up
A pop-up “Gin & Tonics” garden will be at Kew Gardens in west London every weekend until September 7, sponsored by No 3 Gin. It is being created as part of the gardens’ Summer Festival by The Gin Garden and will feature cocktails made with No 3 Gin and plant-based juices, infusions, cordials and aromatic waters. To demonstrate the key elements of No 3, The Gin Garden will showcase the essential juniper plant and a selection of botanicals.

Aperol pop-up in Manchester for Wimbledon
The pop-up Aperol Spritz Social bar is set to return to Spinningfields in Manchester from July 3 to 6 to tie in with the Wimbledon tennis tournament. After its success in 2013, it will be on the Hardman Square Lawns, with a big screen and a new mezzanine terrace offering views of the Wimbledon finals. It will serve the Aperol Spritz, which combines three parts Cinzano Prosecco, two parts Aperol, a splash of soda and a slice of orange over ice.

Perrier-Jouët creates bar for Wimbledon
Champagne Perrier-Jouët has partnered with The Cadogan and Duke of York Square in Chelsea, London, as well as retailer Partridges to create an outdoor Perrier-Jouët bar. It features a 14ft screen for broadcasting the Wimbledon finals weekend live across the square. The bar will serve Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut by bottle and glass and Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque by the bottle.

New training programme for The Ritz
The Ritz London is to launch The Ritz Academy in September, providing a structured three- or five-year supervised programme to find tomorrow’s hospitality leaders. For the first three years, people will spend six months in different parts of the business such as the Rivoli Bar before choosing which route to take which could include a role in food and beverage.
