ALMR names Late Night Awards winners
Operators of bars and clubs across the UK have been recognised in this year’s Late Night Awards run by the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR). The winners were announced at the ALMR’s second annual Dusk ‘til Dawn ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole. Awards went to The Viper Rooms in Sheffield and Harrogate, The Luminar Group, Stonegate Pub Group, Be At One Bars, Beds & Bars and Living Ventures.

UK debut for New Zealand beer
New Zealand’s Monteith’s Brewing Company is making its debut in the UK on-trade with a range of four beers introduced through Heineken UK. Available in 33cl bottles, they comprise Bohemian Pilsner Beer, Southern Pale Ale, Summer Ale and India Pale Ale. The brewing company was established by Stewart Monteith in 1868 for the pioneering gold mining communities on the country’s South Island West Coast and is now a leader in the New Zealand craft beer market.

London return for Boutique Bar Show
Boutique Bar Show is back in London this week, taking place on September 16 and 17. The annual event offers the trade a chance to sample the latest spirits and liqueurs and pick up tips from leading bartenders, drinks producers and business experts.

Grey Goose bottle lights up club market
The “ultimate” bottle-to-table experience is being introduced for Grey Goose vodka at top London nightclubs this autumn. Grey Goose La Nuit des Étoiles features a monochromatic matt blue 1.75 litre Night Vision bottle with an illuminated frosted goose. At the launch, it was served by waiting staff in dresses covered with customised LED lights that pulsed in response to motion and music.

Awards for UK’s best beers in cans
Suffolk brewer Adnams has won the UK’s first awards for best independent beers in a can with its Ghost Ship pale ale. It was awarded Gold at the Indie Beer Can Festival in east London, sponsored by the Can Makers, which represents can manufacturers, in partnership with the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA). Silver went to Daniel Thwaites’ 13 Guns and Bronze was awarded to Breakfast Stout from Arbor Ales.

Liberation announces new Jersey bar
A new bar and restaurant is to open in the historic Weighbridge area of St Helier on Jersey after operator The Liberation Group agreed terms on the site. Through the deal with local property developer Comprop, the company will open the new venue as part of the redevelopment of the former Southampton Hotel and Traders bar site. It is due to be completed by the end of 2015.

London bars unite for cocktail event
Bars across London are partnering drinks brands to come together under one roof at Cocktails in the City in London. On September 18 and 19, the festival in the Grand Hall near St Pancras will feature over 20 different pop-up bars as well as free cocktail-making classes and one-on-one tuition with leading drinks experts. They can also enjoy edible alcoholic treats in the Sweets and Treats Zone and music from Horse Meat Disco DJs.

Competition seeks the Cocktail Kahuna
A competition to find the best tiki cocktails has been launched by TheFloatingRumShack.com with leading specialist bar supplier Cheeky Tiki. It will award the title of Cocktail Kahuna to the creator of the best Polynesian-inspired drink, calling for entries from both bartenders and consumers. Entries are due by Monday September 22.

Shortlist announced for BBPA awards
The British Beer & Pub Association has announced the shortlist for its awards ceremony at its annual dinner at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on October 8. The finalists for Beer Champion are Close Brewery Rentals, Punch Taverns and Timothy Taylor’s, and for Pub Champion they are Admiral Taverns, the Liberation Group and Star Pubs & Bars. The shortlist for the Heart of the Community award is Brakspear, Carlsberg UK, Enterprise Inns, Sharps Brewery and St Austell Brewery.

Sales rise for UK’s leading operators
Britain’s restaurant, bar and managed pub groups recorded another month of steady growth in August, with collective like-for-like sales up 1.3% on the same time last year, according to the latest data from the Coffer Peach Business Tracker. Chillier-than-average weather had an impact, but the sector still delivered a 17th consecutive month of positive growth. The monthly tracker is produced by CGA Peach in partnership with Coffer Group, Baker Tilly and UBS, using data from 28 leading operators.

DaVinci launches salted caramel syrup
DaVinci Gourmet has added salted caramel to its portfolio of syrups for cocktails and coffee. Originating from France, and inspired by the traditional heavily salted butter caramels of Brittany, the syrup has a salty-sweet aroma. It comes in one-litre bottles.

Heineken to unveil bar of the future
Heineken is to unveil the Pop-up City Lounge in London this week to explore what a lounge bar could be like by 2020. This urban design lounge will make its debut at the Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane as part of the 2014 London Design Festival from September 18 to 21. Tens of thousands of crowd-sourced Instagram images were submitted from across the globe providing inspiration for Heineken, which collaborated with young emerging talent. It features new serving and drinking rituals.

Licor 43 targets stylish Londoners
Spanish liqueur brand Licor 43 is targeting stylish Londoners by partnering fashion and jewellery retailer Folli Follie for a Vogue Fashion Night Out on September 23. The late-night event will be held at Folli Follie’s flagship store in Regent Street where consumers will be treated to free Licor 43 cocktails while they shop.

Employee social media extends to app
TGI Friday’s is extending its social platform Pulse, which allows employees to connect and communicate with each other, to a mobile app version. Since its launch for desktop computers in April 2014, it has been used by over half of team members at Friday’s for posting pictures and updates. It also enables and encourages team members to post messages of support and encouragement, recognising achievements.

Production grows for seasonal beer
Bath Ales has increased production of its newest seasonal ale, Forest Hare, with an extra 35,000 pints being made this year. First released in 2012, it is brewed using imported seasonal hops with wheat and barley malt, creating a crisp, fresh taste, at 3.9% ABV. It is available on draught in pubs and bars in the south-west from now until November, including selected Mitchells and Butlers outlets.

Sharp’s relaunches limited-release ale
Cornwall-based Sharp’s Brewery has relaunched its Red Ale for the third year running. The limited-release batch is available in on-trade outlets across south-east and south-west England until November while stocks last. It is brewed with an all-malt grist, which gives off caramel flavours, along with English special malts and hops including three US hop varieties prized for their fruity top notes.

Brewer renames original green hops beer
Wiltshire brewer Wadworth has reintroduced its seasonal Malt n’ Hops beer, made with green hops fresh from the fields, as The Original Green Hopped Beer. It wants to highlight it was the first leading brewer to release a beer made with green hops after the idea was picked up by other brewers. The beer should be available in all Wadworth managed houses and selected tenanted houses from September 15.
