Intertain is acquiring two Après bars in the Midlands as part of a programme to open new Walkabout bars.

It has exchanged contracts on the sites in Lichfield in Staffordshire and Solihull in the West Midlands, taking them over from multiple operator Town & Country Inns.

The acquisitions follow the launch of Walkabout Brighton (pictured) in May – the first new Walkabout to open since 2009.

The sites will close on completion later this month and undergo major refurbishments. They will re-open as “new-style” Walkabouts in time to take advantage of the Rugby World Cup in September.

Intertain will be investing £1m in the refurbishments of both venues, creating 30 new permanent bar, kitchen and management jobs in total.

Town & Country Inns also operates Après bars, which date back to 2002, at The Brewery in Cheltenham, Summerrow in Birmingham, and Mere Green in Sutton Coldfield.

In line with other new-style Walkabouts, the venues will be home to a Reef Bar (pictured) in the main bar area, where linked screens will show undersea and beach footage to evoke a Great Barrier Reef paradise.

They will have a variety of pre-bookable booths and private areas for parties, meals, club nights and live music, along with plush VIP areas and state-of-the-art sound and light systems.

Pre-bookable front row seats will be available for all major televised live sports events which will be shown on giant projection screens and multiple HD TVs, maintaining Walkabout’s reputation as a destination for watching live sport.

They will have a high focus on food, offering customers light bites, main meals, sharing dishes and party plates. This will be combined with a new drinks menu that will include wines, beers and cocktails inspired by the character and beauty of Australia.

They will be targeting both daytime and night-time trade, positioning Walkabout as a place for coffee and lunch as well as to watch live sport or party.

Intertain chief executive John Leslie, said: “We’re very excited to be opening these two new venues. We now have a fantastic platform from which to build for the future.

“Solihull and Lichfield are both great towns and we’re looking forward to introducing customers to our ‘new style’ Walkabout.”
