IWSC awards trophies to world’s top spirits producers


balvenie 40William Grant & Sons was named both distiller and international spirits producer of the year at last night’s International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) ceremony.

The Scottish company produces The Balvenie, Glenfiddich, Monkey Shoulder and Grant’s whiskies as well as Hendrick’s Gin, Tullamore Dew whiskey, Sailor Jerry spiced rum and Reyka vodka.

At last night’s IWSC banquet held last night at Guildhall in London, William Grant & Sons also collected trophies for Grant’s 18 Year Old and The Balvenie 40 Year Old.

The trophy for best UK spirits producer went to Diageo while Demerara Distillers, the makers of El Dorado rums, was named best American and Caribbean producer and collected the rum trophy for El Dorado 8 Year Old.

Among the awards for wine producers, the English Wine Producer of the Year Trophy went to Gusbourne Estate in Kent which also picked up the trophy for best bottle-fermented sparkling wine for its Gusbourne Brut Reserve 2008.

The Vinitaly Communicator of the Year Trophy was awarded to leading spirits expert and bartender trainer Dave Broom.

Trophies were also handed out to El Tesoro reposado tequila, Adnams Copper House Gin, Glenmorangie Signet whisky, Glenfiddich 40 Year Old whisky, Ben Nevis 15 Year Old whisky and Eagle Rare Single Barrel 10-year-old bourbon.

P&C Heidsieck collected two trophies for Champagne Piper-Heidsieck Rare Millésimé 2002 and Champagne Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires Millésimé 1995.
