James Robson to open Italian-influenced cocktail bar

Cartizze Richard WoodsRestaurateur James Robson is to open a bar in a cobbled side street in London’s Mayfair, with a cocktail list created by award-winning bartender Richard Woods (pictured).

Cartizze will be an Italian-influenced cocktail and Bellini bar in the same building as his restaurant Mayfair Pizza Co in Lancashire Court – the former premises of Rocket bar and restaurant.

Due to launch on April 8, it is named after a wine-growing area in northern Italy where prosecco comes from. It will seat just 60 guests, with a menu of cocktails and aperitivo snacks.

The interior, designed by Fabled Design, is a combination of dip-dyed oak panelling with classic Roman details, soft lilac and blue leathers and a New Marquina marble fireplace. The walls feature art by Simone Webb.

The cocktail list has been developed by Richard, who is head of spirit and cocktail development at Duck & Waffle in the Heron Tower in the City of London and last month won the UK title of Bombay Sapphire’s World’s Most Imaginative Bartender.

Richard has drawn on Italian influences to create interesting flavour combinations, reflected in the Cartizze signature cocktail, the silky Olive Oil Gin Fizz, and the Truffled Liquorice Sour which features whiskey, lemon, liquorice, egg white and truffle oil.

Other cocktails, which are priced from £12, include the Blood Orange Bellini, using seasonal blood orange, and the Sgroppino, a twist on the Venetian classic of lemon sorbet and prosecco, which is served in a glass with a spoon.

Drinks are served in vintage glassware and cocktail shakers from the 1920s through to the 1950s, sourced from antique markets across Italy and London.

James said: “Cartizze is a real passion project. The care I’ve taken in collecting beautiful glassware from some of my favourite places in the world reflects the lengths the whole team have gone to to create a unique and intimate drinking den.”

Spirit lockers are available for guests to store their favourite spirits and liqueurs from the Locker List and The Connoisseur’s Collection, a privately sourced selection of spirits dating back to the 1800s.

Aperitivo dishes include hand-dived Orkney isle scallops, San Daniele ham-wrapped figs, truffle honey and roquette plus parmesan biscuits with poppy seeds.

James opened Mews of Mayfair in 2006, also in Lancashire Court which is a narrow pedestrian-only street between New Bond Street and Brook Street. The site also includes wine boutique and private dining room La Cave. James opened Mayfair Pizza Co in January 2013.

Cartizze will open Monday to Saturday from 5pm to 11pm.
