Canada Day pop-up brings cocktails with Canadian flavours

Little Social Canada Day

Special cocktails have been created to celebrate Canada Day by Jamie Jones, group bar executive of Jason Atherton’s The Social Company and 2017 World Class GB champion.

The drinks are part of a Canadian-themed pop-up at the company’s Little Social in London’s Mayfair, inspired by chef patron Cary Docherty’s Canadian roots. It runs today, tomorrow, Saturday – which is Canada Day – and Monday (July 3) and then on the first Monday of each month.

Inspired by Canada’s best-loved ingredients, Jamie’s cocktails include the Maple Leaf Old Fashioned which champions the country’s most famous export, maple syrup, combining it with Canadian whisky, coffee bean bitters and orange zest. The Ice Wine Spritz mixes Canadian ice wine and fruit liqueur with citrus and prosecco.

The Caesar – described as Canada’s signature cocktail – is a twist on a Bloody Mary, comprising vodka and clamato juice (a blend of tomato juice and clam broth) mixed with hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce and finished with a stalk of celery and wedge of lime.

The interiors of Little Social have been given a new look inspired by the traditional cabanes à sucre (sugar shacks) found in eastern Canada. It has been adorned with rustic hunting and fishing paraphernalia, weathered wooden signage and hanging vintage antler chandeliers.

Sheepskin throws and a mounted deer-head centrepiece complete the look, creating a lodge-like ambience for enjoying Cary’s menu of typical Canadian delicacies.

The menu focuses on well-loved classics and classic Canadian ingredients, including poutine, Canada’s national dish of crispy chips and cheese curds topped with gravy but elevated with the addition of maple-glazed morteau sausage.

Tourtière, a traditional French-Canadian meat pie dish, named after the tourtière pan it is cooked in, is also available.

For dessert, guests can revel in the nostalgic sweets treats of Cary’s childhood, including a quintessential Canadian butter tart and a no-bake Nanaimo bar comprising a base layer of wafer crumb topped with custard-flavoured butter icing and covered in melted chocolate.

Jamie Jones, who looks after the drinks across The Social Company’s bars, was declared GB World Class champion earlier this month.
