LA Group names Caledonian Bartenders Cup champion

Caledonian Bartenders CupRob Wilkie from Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Café has been crowned the Caledonian Bartenders Cup Champion of 2014.

He won the competition against over 20 other bartenders, placing first after two rounds of an intensive judging process at LA Group’s Liquid Arts Academy in Glasgow.

In second place was Alix Nardella from Moskito in Glasgow and third was Meg Murray from The Finnieston Bar & Restaurant in Glasgow.

Scott Gemmell from organiser LA Group said: “With over 20 competitors this year, the Caledonian Bartenders Cup competition is becoming the one to win for bar professionals in the UK, with guests attending and bartenders competing from London, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. “

Sponsored by the Botanist Gin from Bruichladdich Distillers, this year’s Caledonian Bartenders Cup featured a new slant with bartenders foraging in their local areas to create a unique cocktail that was personal to them and their surroundings.

After this round, six finalists (pictured) went forward to the mystery box round where they were each given 20 minutes to put their palettes and senses to the test.

Scott went foraging for the mystery box ingredients in the urban jungle of Maryhill in Glasgow with Fraser Barrett, also from the LA Group, and guests, bartenders Thomas Aske and Glen Hooper from London, Glasgow-based chef Craig Grozier and professional forager Mark Williams.

Scott added: “We would like to thank everyone for their help and support in making this year an incredible day and night for all who participated.”
