Leading bartenders are backing this year’s National Piña Colada Day which will see events and promotions run with Malibu rum in bars around the UK.

Six ambassadors have been announced for the campaign: JJ Goodman, co-founder of London Cocktail Club bars, Ali Reynolds of Hawksmoor Spitalfields in London, Sam Fish of Mojo Bar in Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester, Mike Aikman, co-founder of Bramble and The Last Word in Edinburgh, Si Taylor of 81 Ltd in Liverpool, and Pablo “Pabsy” Hutton of Cane & Grain in Manchester.

A competition for bartenders has also been launched seeking the most fun garnish for a Malibu Piña Colada. Entry is via a photo or video on social media, using the hashtag, #PimpedColada, via MalibuUK on Facebook, @MalibuUK on Twitter or @MalibuRumUK on Instagram.

Entries will close on July 3 and the winner will be announced on National Piña Colada Day. The winner and a friend will join Malibu for a trip to Bestival on the Isle of Wight in September with access to the VIP Lucky Cat bar.

Pernod Ricard UK announced last month that it was this year doubling its marketing spend behind National Piña Colada Day, which will be on Friday July 10.

Consumers will be able to enjoy a free Malibu Piña Colada at over 800 bars, including Be At One, Slug & Lettuce and Las Iguanas, as well as a number of independent bars across the UK on both July 10 and 11.

Marketing manager Joanna Alexander added: “As National Piña Colada Day conveniently falls on a Friday this year, outlets can capitalise with a Piña Colada party all weekend.”

JJ Goodman, who is well-known for his love of a good Piña Colada, said: “You know a drink’s a classic when you take a sip with your eyes closed and it transports you to another place and time. In this case, hot sandy beaches surrounded by music and lapping waves!”

Ali Reynolds said: “National Piña Colada Day is a great day, dedicated to celebrating one amazing drink! My favourite-ever Piña Colada would be either at Artesian at the Langham hotel London, created with a slushy machine, or at Amoeba in Clifton, Bristol.”

Sam Fish added: “National Piña Colada day… another great excuse to drink plenty of Malibu!”
