Leeds bar to open pop-up serving ‘inspirational bar food’

Jake's Leeds Tongue Cheek

The team behind Jake’s Bar in Leeds are to open a pop-up restaurant, Tongue ‘n Cheek, with chef Greg Lewis this week.

It will open on Thursday (November 21) within Jake’s Bar and Still Room (pictured) in Call Lane, Leeds, serving up “inspirational bar food”, running until at least Christmas.

Greg, formerly at the now-closed Hummingbird Bar & Kitchen in Leeds, will use locally sourced produce and “unknown and forgotten and quirky” cuts of meat, prepared with modern cooking techniques in a “somewhat tongue ‘n cheek way”.

In October, the bar’s owner Leelex ran a Pop-Up Pantry with Greg in Seven Dials as part of London Cocktail Week, featuring the company’s own Portobello Road Gin.

The menu consists of bar snacks such as crispy cod cheeks, rare-breed pork kebab and chef’s special crab, each priced at £4.95 or £12.95 for three.

Larger plates will include English veal burgers, North Yorkshire mutton, pig cheek subs, ox-tongue subs, beef and oyster pies, gin and tonic battered fish, and surf and turf.

Greg said: “My aim is to bring high-quality, honest cooking to the dude food generation.”

All food served at Tongue ‘n Cheek will be half price until December 2. “We are so sure you’re going to love this menu we are going half price on the whole menu for the opening 10 days so you can try it all and find your favourites,” Greg added.

To celebrate the launch, Jake’s Bar will showcase a raft of new cocktails, theatrically prepared and inspired by homemade distillates from Tabitha, the bar’s copper pot still.
