London bars and bartenders nominated in European awards


Mixology Bar Awards

Bars and bartenders in London are among nominees in the first European-wide categories run as part of the annual Mixology Bar Awards.

They have reached the long list in three new categories added to the awards that were previously solely for the industry in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (pictured). There is also a new category for best new European spirit or bar product.

The three UK nominees for best European bar are Dandelyan at the Mondrian London hotel, The Connaught Bar at The Connaught hotel and The American Bar at The Savoy.

The nominees for best new European bar also include three in the UK: The Gibson, Oriole and 7 Tales at Sosharu, again all in London.

Four UK-based bartenders are up for the award of best mixologist: Marian Beke of The Gibson, Ago Perrone of The Connaught Bar, Ryan Chetiyawardana of White Lyan, and Luca Cinalli of Oriole.

The long list for best European product includes Angostura Rum No 1, Napue Gin, Star of Bombay gin, Rutte Celery Dry gin, Mancino Chinato and Stiggins’ Fancy Plantation Pineapple rum.

Five finalists will be chosen for each category ahead of the Mixology Bar Awards ceremony on Monday October 10 at the Maritim Hotel Berlin, held the night before the start of the Bar Convent trade show in Berlin.

The final jury is made up of 16 bar and spirits leaders from across Europe, including UK-based “Maestro” Salvatore Calabrese from Salvatore at Maison Eight in Hong Kong, drinks consultant Fernando Castellon from France, Thanos Prunarus of Baba Au Rum in Athens & Greece’s Fine Magazine, and Martin Kraut from the Prague Barshow.

The long list has been put together based on voting by 120 advisory council members, following the same judging method as the Mixology Bar Awards’ annual German, Austrian and Swiss awards.

Salvatore said: “After decades in this industry, serving in this magnificent jury really makes me feel proud. The bar is the ultimate theatre in the world of hospitality. It’s an honour to help choose a new spirit or bar product that may serve as a canvas for new creations and to name the best artists and places who make a difference in pushing the boundaries of our trade.”

Helmut Adam, publisher of Mixology magazine and co-founder of Bar Convent, said: “We’re planning on expanding and improving our European awards on a yearly basis, with the hope that we are giving bars and bartenders from lesser-known regions and cities a platform to gain wider recognition”.
