London’s merchant history inspires new bar

Lewis Hayes Nate Brown The London Bar ConsultantsA new City of London bar specialising in premium spirits including gins is to be opened by The London Bar Consultants.

Merchant House in Well Court, off Bow Lane, will be a celebration of London’s mercantile history and the spices, sugar and rum brought to the city over the centuries.

Due to open on June 11, it will cover two floors with a capacity of 130, stocking super-premium, rare and vintage rums as well as a diverse collection of over 250 gins. A dedicated area for spirit masterclasses will be on the ground level, with the main bar in the basement.

The London Bar Consultants, founded by Nate Brown and Lewis Hayes (pictured), were previously involved in setting up and running the bar at City of London Distillery off Fleet Street in collaboration with owner Jonathan Clark.

They are designing a bespoke cocktail menu for Merchant House to showcase the high-end spirits on offer. A short food menu including meat and cheese platters from local suppliers will also be available.

The design and furnishings incorporate dark blue leather seating set against wood flooring, with hints of London’s merchant history reflected in the fixtures and fittings. Combined with subtle lighting, the décor is intended to create an “intimate and enticing” atmosphere. Plans are in place to introduce a regular live jazz music night in the coming months.

Nate said: “We want the focus at Merchant House to be the guest experience, from the moment they are greeted at the door, to the masterclasses, cocktails and interaction with our bartenders.

“The fascinating shared trade history of gin and rum is something we wish to celebrate with our guests through an exploration of fine spirits.”
