London’s Connaught Bar named World’s Best Bar 2020

The list of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2020, sponsored by Perrier, was revealed last night (5 November) via an online awards ceremony, which saw London’s Connaught Bar claim the coveted title.

Adapting to a new virtual event, 2020’s ceremony aimed to bring the global hospitality community even closer together and provide positive news for bars as they enter the next stage of recovery from the global coronavirus pandemic.

The 12th edition of the annual ranking features bars from 23 countries, including 11 new entries and three re-entries.

The Connaught Bar at luxury hotel The Connaught in Mayfair, renowned for exceptional craftsmanship, landmark cocktails and daring new mixes, has had a place on the Best Bar’s list since 2010.

This year is the first time the venue has been named the official winner. The Connaught Bar takes the number one spot from last year’s winner Dante, based in New York, USA.

The distinction comes at a difficult time, as the UK enters a second lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw the bar close this month.

Agostino Perrone, director of mixology remains hopeful, however, as he accepted the bar’s award via Zoom last night.

He said: “This accolade rounds off a long journey of dedication for the entire Connaught Bar team who have never stopped believing in our work.

“Our commitment to the hospitality industry and to our beloved guests has been our core pillar and driver for the past 12 years and in particular for the last 18 months.

“We have been working hard and keeping up, as individuals, professionals but foremost as a team and a bar community. Unity has been an essential factor and it will always be, for our team and for our industry.”

Eight London bars feature on the top 50 list, with three in the top 10 – Tayêr + Elementary ranked at number five, having risen 47 places from number 52 last year, and Kwãnt at number six, up from number 47 in 2019.
