If roses be the drink of love: cocktails for Valentine’s Day

Skylounge Valentine's Cocktail Simply Love

Why bother with traditional bouquets of roses for Valentine’s Day when you can enjoy the bouquet and taste of them in a cocktail. Two cocktails, the Chelsea Rose (pictured below) and the Raspberry Rose Royale, complementing the use of rose petals among Hendrick’s Gin’s botanicals.

Chelsea Rose
50ml Hendrick’s Gin
150ml Cloudy apple juice
5 Fresh raspberries
Dash Fresh lemon juice
Combine all ingredients into a teapot, stir briskly and leave to brew for a few moments. Pour into an ice-filled teacup. Garnish with one fresh raspberry and a slice of cucumber.

Raspberry Rose Royale
25ml Hendrick’s Gin
5ml Sugar syrup
One Fresh raspberry
Top up with champagne
Combine raspberry, sugar and gin in cocktail shaker. After just three strong shakes, finely strain into base of a flute before layering the champagne on top. Mix before drinking. Garnish with one fresh raspberry.

These two recipes are among many created by drinks brands and bars to mark Valentine’s Day on Sunday. Coin Laundry, a 70s and 80s-inspired bar and restaurant opened by Urban Leisure Group in Exmouth Market in London in December, features the Blind Date on its retro cocktail menu. Inspired by the TV dating show, it is made with date-infused brandy, lemon juice, sugar and egg white with a port float.

At the bar at Ace Hotel in Shoreditch, the special Valentine’s Day drink is the Rocky Rose (pictured below). Made with American whiskey Tincup, the cocktail is long and refreshing with hints of spice and a delicate fruity finish. It is a mix of 50ml of Tincup American whiskey with 100ml of Fentiman’s Rose Lemonade.

The Beaufort Bar at The Savoy hotel has a floral cocktail for lovers on its pop-up menu, called The impressionist, which is inspired by Monet’s impressionistic paintings and served with a smoking rose. It is made with Grey Goose Vodka, Miclo Violette Liqueur, Cherry Marnier, raspberry and Ruinart Rosé champagne, with a rose fog

B&H Buildings in Clerkenwell is offering a special version of its traditional bottomless Bellini this Valentine’s weekend, made with fresh raspberry puree topped up with Bouvet champagne. The bar has also created a special Valentine’s sharing cocktail, the Perfecto Amor Bouvet, made with Picpoul de Pinet white wine, Poire Williams liqueur, apple and pear juice, pomegranate seeds, and rose petals.

Pickle Jar - Coq d'Argent

Coq d’Argent, the rooftop bar in the City of London, has created a refreshing Valentine’s cocktail, the pink-hued Pickle Jar (pictured above) with 1800 tequila.

moroccan negroni

A rose-infused cocktail is recommended by Campari, with a recipe created by bartender Imad El Idrissi for Campari’s Worldwide Negroni Compendium. The Moroccan Negroni (pictured above) is made with rose petals, Campari, gin, date and peach liqueur.

Moroccan Negroni
30ml Campari

10ml Peach liqueur
Put all the ingredients in a mixing glass, and crush them with a muddler. Use a cocktail strainer to pour the contents into a glass and add ice cubes. Mix everything with a cocktail spoon.
