Luminar makes first acquisition with Essex club

evoke nightclubNightclub operator The Luminar Group has acquired its first new site since the clubs were saved from administration nearly two years ago.

It has paid an undisclosed sum for the 1,200-capacity Evoke (pictured) in Chelmsford, Essex, from Steve Webb of Premier Leisure Group.

The club opened in July last year and features the Ice Bar (pictured below), a large main dance floor, the Japanese-inspired Koudo Lounge bar, private VIP booths and a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system.

The Luminar Group’s chief executive Peter Marks said: “We are delighted to acquire this prestigious nightclub in Chelmsford which already has a well-deserved reputation. It’s a stylish, high-quality well-invested club which fits perfectly with our current portfolio and we look forward to working with the team at Evoke to build on the foundations laid by Steve.”

The transition to The Luminar Group’s ownership will be seamless, with the 34 employees transferring to the new owners and the club continuing to operate as usual.

Webb said: “It’s a fantastic venue and we’re really proud of the experience that we’ve created. I’m happy to be handing the reins over to The Luminar Group, who I know will continue to build on our local reputation and further enhance facilities for our customers.”

Luminar, which now operates 54 clubs including Pryzm, Oceana and Liquid, was created after the former Luminar business went into administration in 2011. It was formed by a £45million deal led by Marks with Alex Geffert and Joe Heanen.

Marks said: “As part of our strategy, we always said we would look at tactical opportunities to acquire new sites that fit our portfolio and deliver a good return on investment. Evoke Chelmsford is a prestigious club in a great location and we’re pleased to have secured this new venue.”
