The UK brand ambassador for Luxardo has embarked on a campaign to make 2016 the year of the Aviation cocktail.

Gareth “G” Franklin (pictured) is travelling around and above Britain for a series of events to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first publication of the cocktail’s recipe which requires Luxardo Maraschino liqueur.

Under the banner of the Luxardo Aviation Society, he will be appearing at events such as London Cocktail Week in October and Imbibe Live in London in July.

His schedule also includes making “amazing Aviation” cocktails on board his flight to the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans in July. His activities will culminate in a presentation at The Spirit Show in London in December.

G is celebrating the classic recipe, which combines gin, Luxardo Maraschino, lemon juice and crème de violette, but also discovering contemporary new twists on the original by a new generation of bartenders.

He said: “Every keen cocktail drinker can enjoy Aviation celebrations this year. We want to share all those Aviation anecdotes, new creations and photos, and certainly enjoy more than a few finest cocktails together. Keep the Aviation flying!”

The Aviation cocktail was conceived in the early 1900s, inspired by the Wright Brothers’ innovations in flight. It was first put into print in Hugo R Ensslin’s cocktail book Recipes For Mixed Drinks in 1916. The drink survived through Prohibition, finding its way into Harry Craddock’s Savoy Cocktail Book.
