Maverick Drinks releases dark ‘sherry monster’ whiskies

Maverick Darkness whisky sherry caskMaverick Drinks has announced the launch of Darkness! – a range of bold, dark single-malt and single-grain whiskies sourced from leading Scottish distilleries.

The whiskies have a deep, dark colour from a three-month finish in specially crafted 50-litre first-fill sherry casks which the UK drinks distributor says makes the range the first of its kind.

The casks previously held some of Spain’s top sherries, including the sweet Pedro Ximénez and the semi-dry nutty oloroso, bringing flavours such as Christmas cake, rich spice, prunes, raisins and dates to the whiskies.

The small size of the casks allows more wood contact with the whisky, increasing both dark colour and rich flavour dramatically – prompting Maverick Drinks to dub them “sherry monsters”.

The Darkness! bottlings include a 21-year-old Ardbeg, finished in oloroso sherry casks, a 16-year-old Clynelish, a 15-year-old Macallan finished in a Pedro Ximénez cask, and a Benrinnes 15 Year Old finished in an oloroso cask.

The labels for Darkness! are foiled and embossed and were hand-illustrated by Tom Lane – designer of the Bicycle Playing Cards and the artwork for the book accompanying Heston Blumenthal’s Fantastical Feasts.

They come in 50cl bottles and are available from Master of Malt from today.
