Mr Fogg’s Residence, the Mayfair bar based on the home of Jules Verne’s famous adventurer, Phileas Fogg, has become the first bar to send a cocktail into space.
A bottle of bitters was sent 27km above the earth’s surface with the help of acclaimed food and drink scientists, Bompas & Parr, who sent the drink into space using a bespoke balloon.
The bottle travelled for 2 hours and 15 minutes with temperatures dropping as low as -57 degrees. The cocktail will be used as bitters and available for guests to enjoy in a limited edition cocktail, served at the bar.
Mr Fogg’s Residence is inspired by Jules Verne’s classic tale, Around the World in 80 Days. Verne wrote two novels between 1865 and 1870, From The Earth to the Moon and Around The Moon, which describe a planned trip to the moon. Despite being works of fiction written over a hundred years before the first man set foot on the moon, Verne’s calculations for space travel were surprisingly close to reality.
The bottle will now be taken on the final leg of its journey and turned into London’s most well travelled drink, with From The Earth to The Stars, a celestial libation made with space Aged Negroni, Vermouth, Campari, Tanqueray TEN Gin, fresh lavender, grapefruit peels, orange peel, lemon peel, fresh chamomile and angelica root.
The cocktail will be available for £25. All guests who purchase the cocktail will also receive a certificate that states they have sampled bitters that have been sent to space.
Inception Group co-founder Charlie Gilkes said: “Space has been on the forefront of everybody’s minds of late with Tim Peake, Richard Branson’s tourism in space endeavours and science fiction films like the Arrival.
“Mr Fogg’s ethos has always been based on exploration and we’ve held many talks with everyone from Sir Ranulph Fiennes to Levison Wood – so it was a natural step for us to explore the possibility of a cocktail from space.
“We pride ourselves in thinking outside the box with our bars and this project has been a particular favourite to do. We hope everyone will enjoy their cocktail from orbit soon.”
