McCain Foodservice sets out to ‘upgrade’ the potato

McCain Foodservice has launched Menu Signatures Crispers and Sweet Potato Rustics for the casual dining sector.

Following operator research, the foodservice expert discovered an appetite for casual dining restaurants to be serving new styles of potato, particularly as an ‘upgrade option’, as the trend for premiumisation continues to grow.

Described as perfect as a meal accompaniment, or a dish in their own right, Menu Signatures Crispers and Sweet Potato Rustics lend themselves to sharing platters, side dishes or loaded with toppings.

To support the launch of the two new products, McCain has introduced its ‘50 ways with’ recipes, which feature Crispers and Sweet Potato Rustics and aim to help operators stand out from the competition by creating memorable experiences for their customers. Dishes include Buffalo Chicken Crispers with BBQ sauce and Spicy My Thai Sweet Potato Wedges. All 50 recipes can be found online.

McCain conducted a consumer Twitter poll to discover just how important it is for restaurants to keep their menus new and exciting. 74% of those surveyed said they would be more likely to visit a restaurant or pub after seeing new dishes promoted across social media, whilst 72% would tell their friends and family about a new dish if it was great.

The company also ran trials with key operators including Steak, Rattle & Roll in order to gain real and honest feedback on its latest creations.

Steak, Cattle & Roll executive chef Dennis Waller said: “Our customers are always looking for the next, best thing so it’s important to try and stay ahead of the trends, ideally setting them!

“Sweet Potato Rustics and Crispers will be a great addition to our sides offering. They’re unique but also really versatile so we can present them to customers in lots of new ways.

“The Crispers really are crispy, but also light, perfect for topping with sauces, cheese and meats. The Sweet Potato Rustics are fluffier than typical sweet potato fries and the skin-on element makes them look very rustic, which gives them that hand cut style our customers like. Of course, they are also very simple to prepare, which only adds to the list of benefits.”

Jo Holborn, marketing and category controller at McCain Foodservice, added: “We are incredibly excited to be launching Crispers and Sweet Potato Rustics into casual dining.

“Following research with both operators and consumers, it was clear that there was a demand for products that not only stand out on the menu but also give customers that wow factor.

“At McCain Foodservice, we are constantly innovating to ensure we offer products that help operators create new and different experiences for their customers and can’t wait to see what they think of our latest development.”
