Merlet et Fils revives classic style of cherry liqueur

Merlet Soeurs Cerises cherry liqueur

A classic style of cherry brandy has been added to the range of premium liqueurs from French producer Merlet et Fils.

Soeurs Cerises is made from a selection of specific cherry varieties including Morello, chosen to produce a wide range of aromas and flavours.

Using a combination of two craft production methods, the fruits are macerated in neutral alcohol and the resulting infusion is married to a distilled cherry spirit. A touch of a young Merlet cognac is added to bring power and complexity.

Distributed in the UK by Cask Liquid Marketing, it is a revival of a great classic fruit liqueur that first came to prominence in the early 1900s. It is the latest innovation from Gilles Merlet who took over the Merlet family’s distillery in the 1970s.

Soeurs Cerises can be enjoyed neat, on ice or in cocktails such as two classics, a Singapore Sling and a Blood and Sand.

It is deep crimson in colour with shades of purple. On the nose, it has powerful aromas of Morello cherries plus subtle notes of almonds and cherry stones. On the palate, the flavours of ripe, almost syrupy cherries stand out, complemented by a certain acidity, which brings a touch of freshness, and by the cognac which offers a good lengthy finish.

Soeur Cerises is part of a range of seven fruit liqueurs produced by the Merlet family who have been supplying cognac for merchant houses since 1850.
