At last night’s ceremony, accolades were also given to the German-speaking region’s favourite products, including spirit of the year Tanqueray Malacca gin and the Bartender’s Choice award for Angostura Bitters.

Germany’s bar of the year was named as Spirits in Köln, while Austria’s was revealed to be Dino’s American Bar in Vienna and Switzerland’s was Onyx Bar in Zürich.

The title of mixologist of the year went to Arnd H Heissen of Curtain Club at the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin, while newcomer of the year was Reinhard Pohorec of The Sign in Vienna and host of the year was Thomas Altenberger of Lebensstern in Berlin.

Hotel bar of the year was Bar DaCaio (pictured) at The George Hotel in Hamburg, while Spirits in Köln won for bar team of the year. Bar menu of the year went to Gamsei in Munich, which also helped Munich to win the Mixology City Award 2014.

The awards honoured the best of the best behind the bar for the seventh year running, hosted by Irish bartending specialist Philip Duff and German TV presenter Hadnet Tesfai at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Berlin. Among the 500 guests were Munich’s legendary bartender Charles Schumann, Alfred Cointreau, sixth generation of the liqueur-making family, and global rum ambassador Ian Burrell.

Helmut Adam, publisher of Germany’s Mixology magazine and founder of Bar Convent, said: “Bar culture is on its way to becoming an integral part of central Europe’s food and drink tradition. The Mixology Bar Awards’ winners are the central ambassadors of this culture.

“We founded the Mixology Bar Awards in order to give the profession in Germany, Austria and Switzerland its well deserved recognition. The United States, the motherland of the cocktail, has served as an example for us in the process. There, awards have for years been an integral part of bar culture. We think it’s vitally important that excellence is rewarded. It also helps to further increase professionalisation within the industry.”

The awards preceded today’s opening of Bar Convent in Berlin today and tomorrow, which is being attended by many in the UK bar trade.

Presenters and speakers at the trade show include Ian Burrell, Kamm & Sons spirit creator Alex Kammerling, Tristan Stephenson of consultancy Fluid Movement and London bars Purl and Worship Street Whistling Shop, Alex Kratena of London’s Artesian Bar at the Langham hotel, Romée de Goriainoff of Experimental Cocktail Club, and Jack McGarry and Sean Muldoon from New York City bar The Dead Rabbit.
