Monin launches popcorn syrup for cocktails in UK

The nostalgic, retro flavour of popcorn has been captured by Monin UK for a new syrup for cocktails and hot drinks.

Described as a first for the beverage industry, Monin Popcorn syrup offers the buttery, nutty flavour of popcorn with a light roasted aftertaste. It has been developed by the cocktail ingredient specialist to meet the growing trend for replicating dessert and snack flavours in drink form.

The new syrup is part of Monin’s winter 2016 beverage programme which will support bar staff in creating exciting seasonal drinks, supported by branded point-of-sale kits including tent cards, posters and illustrated recipe booklets.

Lee Hyde, Monin’s beverage innovation manager and a former bartender, said: “Popcorn’s popularity as a snack has exploded in recent years, with several new brands and varieties launching into the marketplace.

“We want to capitalise on this trend by bringing that much-loved, nostalgic flavour into the bar and coffee shop sectors.

“Monin Popcorn syrup’s buttery, roasted notes are paired perfectly with a caramelised nuttiness, which really shines through in a flavoured latte or hot chocolate. Popcorn milkshakes are a must-try too – add a shot of bourbon to create a hard shake for your menu.

“To create a wonderfully exotic twist this winter, try a Popcorn Pina Colada or a Popcorn Espresso Martini.

“Like all Monin products, our new premium syrup will enable bartenders and baristas to experiment with exciting flavour combinations while maintaining excellent consistency and quality of flavour from drink to drink.”

Monin Popcorn syrup was developed at the brand’s HQ in Bourges, France, by its beverage innovation team. It is dairy and gluten free and comes in 70cl glass bottles and one-litre plastic bottles.

Popcorn Espresso Martini
20ml Monin Popcorn syrup
50ml Vodka
1 shot of espresso
Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.

Popcorn Colada
20ml Monin Popcorn syrup
15ml Le Fruit de Monin Coconut
50ml Light rum
50ml Pineapple juice
3 pieces of fresh pineapple
Mix all ingredients together in a blender. Add ice and blend well. Pour in a colada glass garnished with pineapple slices and leaves.

Popcorn Hardshake
20ml Monin Popcorn syrup
40ml Bourbon
3 large scoops vanilla ice cream
140ml Milk
Blend all ingredients well, pour into a hurricane glass or milk bottle glass, garnish with popcorn and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Popcorn Caramel Milkshake
20ml Monin Popcorn syrup
15ml Monin Caramel sauce
1 scoop Le Frappé de Monin Vanilla
120ml Milk
Blend all ingredients with ice until smooth. Drizzle Monin Caramel sauce in a glass and pour mixture gently. Serve garnished with whipped cream.
