A “pop down” bar rather than a pop-up is to open in London, promising to turn “everything you would expect from a typical night out on its head”.
William Grant & Sons UK is creating Neave’s Pop Down Bar in Spitalfields in east London in July for its whisky brand Monkey Shoulder, headed by its UK brand ambassador, Grant Neave (pictured).
Instead of surly bouncers, customers have been promised smiles, jokes and even flowers when they arrive at the door. Guests will be able to enjoy cocktail tasters while they wait and be given a “name” to drop at the bar with Neave’s “mates rates” tokens.
Use the hashtag #NeavesBar with a picture on Twitter or Instagram to earn a free print and the chance to win prizes. The pictures will be available through a printer on site.
There will be no traditional dress code but anyone who is considered to be overdressed will be offered alternatives such as comedy trainers to wear over their shoes or a selection of trucker caps.
The long and refreshing Apple Mac cocktail will be available on draught alongside a list of twisted classics such as the Gorilla Old Fashioned, pre-batched and served from a 4.5-litre Monkey Shoulder bottle, plus other innovative drinks.
Dram & Smoke, described as “mad scientists of the food world”, will provide specially crafted “Manapés”, such as “duck donuts” and deep-fried Mars Bars in tempura batter with Monkey Shoulder jellies.
Grant said: “We listened to Brits’ main bugbears about enjoying a night out and used that insight to reinvent the experience.
“Neave’s Pop Down is not just another pop-up. It defies expectations, challenges convention and encourages everyone to pop down and have some fun. Our doors are only open for three short weeks, so people need to put it in their diary now or miss out.”
It will be on the corner of Ely’s Yard/Hanbury Street, London E1 6QR from July 3 to 26, open Thursdays and Fridays from 4pm to 11pm, Saturdays from 11am to 11pm and Sundays from midday to 10pm. Entry will be free.
