Monsters inspire cocktails at ‘twisted Christmas’ bar

A bar is opening in London in December as an antidote to Christmas merriment, promising to transport guests to a Pagan midwinter populated by monsters.

Presenting a “twisted Christmas”, Batch is being created by bar events and pop-up specialist Twist London at 56 Peckham Rye in Peckham, next door to restaurant and bar Pedler.

The Twist London bartenders have devised drinks inspired by “some of the most terrifying Christmas monsters”, using small-batch and unusual spirits in partnership with Maverick Drinks including St George Terroir Gin, NYDC Ragtime Rye, Few Bourbon and Bathtub Sloe gin.

The menu will reimagine creatures such as Grýla, who comes down every year from the mountains of Iceland to make a children stew, and Krampus, Father Christmas’s demonic sidekick who is responsible for dishing out punishment for naughty kids in places such as the Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary and Austria.

Alongside the drinks, including hot cocktails, guests can order in food via Deliveroo and UberEats. Also on the menu will be wines, including some on tap, and beer from Peckham’s Brick Brewery.

After a launch on December 1, Batch opens to the public on December 2. It will be open Tuesday to Thursday from 5pm to 11pm and Friday and Saturday from 5pm to midnight. Visit www.batch.bar for bookings.
