Bar operator Mothership Group has expanded by buying a high-profile east London bar and live music venue from leading group MAMA & Company.

It plans to build on the success of Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen with no more than “a few cosmetic tweaks” and return the 15-year-old venue back to its artistic roots.

Mothership Group, which has a turnover of over £10m a year, already operates east London venues The Book Club, Queen of Hoxton and Stories as well as Patterns on Brighton seafront. It also hosts more than 1,000 cultural and music events a year.

Mothership Group’s commercial director Jon Ross, said: “We’ve been huge fans of the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen for many years. It’s a great bar in a world-famous square and we’re really excited about taking it on.

“It has an amazing history with some of the best bands on today’s scene having broken there and we’re looking forward to continuing and adding to that story.”

The acquisition was funded partly through cash flow and partly through debt, using Santander’s Growth Capital programme.

The group said it would be committing time and energy to ensuring the venue remained a well-loved and vital live music establishment by working closely with staff, promoters and other stakeholders.

Jon added: “We may look to make some changes to the site over the coming months but whatever we do, the site will stay as a linchpin of the live scene in east London.”

Adam Taylor, live music programmer for Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, said: “Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen has been at the heart of east London’s music scene since its opening in 2001 and many of the biggest and best-loved bands in the world have played here early in their careers.

“It’s exciting to be working with Mothership Group, known for their unique and innovative events, in continuing Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen’s legacy.”

Jon runs Mothership Group with operations director Andy Maddocks and HR director Aoife Halliday, supported by a workforce of over 130 people.

MAMA & Company is part of LN-Gaiety Holdings, a joint venture between Live Nation and Gaiety Investments, and operates other venues around the UK including O2 Institute Birmingham, O2 Forum Kentish Town, O2 Ritz Manchester and The Jazz Cafe in Camden.

MAMA Group acquired Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen nearly three years ago from Barworks which operates 5cc cocktail bars, The Diner restaurants, Electricity Showrooms in Hoxton and other bars and pubs around London and Essex.
