Mr Lyan launches quest for ‘traceability’ with Blocktail project

Two acclaimed bartenders, Ryan Chetiyawardana, aka, Mr Lyan, and Robin Honhold, have vowed to create “the world’s most truthful cocktail”, using blockchain technology.

In an open letter published in Imbibe, Mr Lyan lays out his manifesto for the industry, urging all to take note and act similarly in the future.

He calls out for the hospitality sector to focus on real change, asking: “What is the true cost implicit in your enjoyment of your cocktail?”

To develop the creation, which is suitably named The Blocktail, the pair will collaborate with University College London (UCL) and a number of other partners.

Mr Lyan will be working with UCL’s new Centre for Blockchain Technologies OweMe, a ground-breaking blockchain-based payment platform, and DH READY, a creative futures consultancy.

Looking beyond traditional sustainable practices to incorporate digital technology, Mr Lyan is already in talks with leading global drinks brands and independent producers to verify every part of the supply chain for the project.

Blockchain and cryptocurrency are increasingly being used within the food and drink sector, including the Bristol distillery using blockchain to sell spirits, or the Bit Burger market stall in Camden.

Further developments will be announced in the upcoming months.
