A new company has been launched bringing together businesses importing and promoting Mexican food and drink including tequila in the UK.

MexImport Group has been set up to offer high-quality, ethically sourced products from Mexico for bars, pubs, restaurants and cafés as well as retailers.

It encompasses award-winning supplier as well as Tequila & Mezcal Fest, which this year held festivals in Liverpool and London to promote agave spirits to consumers.

The group was launched last night at the Mexican Ambassador’s Residence in London, hosted by the Mexican ambassador, Diego Gomez Pickering. It ties in with 2015 being officially The Year of Mexico in the UK and The Year of the UK in Mexico.

Meximport has been formed by Katya Torres de la Rocha, chief executive of since 2009, with Eduardo Gomez Resendiz, the founder of Tequila & Mezcal Fest and formerly at Amathus Drinks and Corona Extra in the UK. The third partner is Francisco Yong Garcia, former CEO of Mission Foods.

Its products, many supplied exclusively, include drinks such as Herencia de Plata Tequila and craft beer Ocho Reales plus sauces, marinades, herbs and spices, cooking oils and agave syrup.

Katya said: “We represent quality products at competitive prices that are not only for Mexican people and the 1,000-plus Mexican restaurants that we supply. We want to share what Mexico has to offer.

“We want to develop brands. We are not here to just move product from Mexico to the UK.”

Welcoming the launch of MexImport, the ambassador pointed out: “Mexican gastronomy has been growing in popularity in the UK. It’s now the most popular cuisine in London after Indian.”
