New concept from Walkabout operator

Beach Bar at Maluko LeedsIntertain, the operator of the Walkabout bar chain, has unveiled a new tiki-style concept called Maluko. The venue was opened last night (August 9) in the former site of Intertain’s Bar Risa in Albion Street in Leeds city centre.

Maluko is made up of four rooms – the Tiki Lounge (pictured below), Beach Bar (pictured above), Cabin Room and Club Room – and follows an investment of £500,000 in the rebrand and redesign of the site, working with design company Spacialized.

Intertain, which took over a package of former Regent Inns sites three years ago, has been investing in other sites within its portfolio including its Walkabout bars in Watford, Liverpool, Temple in London and Hanley in Staffordshire.

Intertain chief executive John Leslie said no decision had been made yet on whether to roll out the Maluko concept, although he said the company was looking to acquire sites for Walkabout across the UK.

“We’re very excited about the opening of Maluko as it’s the first time we have opened this style of venue,” he said. “So far our refurbishment programme has shown great returns on investment, and we’re confident that Maluko will further this success.”

The existing bar area in the Leeds venue has been rebranded and refurnished as the Tiki Lounge, and is characterised by sumptuous Polynesian-style décor, inspired by Hawaiian and Maori culture. It features a bamboo bar, a bamboo canopy over the bar and bamboo furniture. The Tiki Lounge is independent of the main bar and is available for private hire as well as regular club and party nights.

The main area of Maluko features the new Beach Bar, based on a Hawaiian theme. It features high-end tropical furnishings and includes new, fixed booths, a new dance floor and a new stage area for live music and club nights. The Beach Bar is open throughout the day, serving sharing platters and tapas-style meals until 8pm.

The Cabin Room is decorated with luxury, beach house-style furnishings. With its own ambience, it has a separate entrance that leads back to the main Beach Bar and Tiki Lounge, ensuring that the room feels connected to the rest of the venue. The Cabin is an area primarily designed as a “meet and greet” room for the comedy club nights run under Intertain’s Highlight brand, but it can also be booked independently.

The Club Room has been substantially refurbished and will continue to hold two Highlight comedy nights per week. Luxury, fixed booths have been installed, giving customers the option of pre-booking for Highlight events and parties. The installation of a minimalist bar area and removable furniture have created a flexible space that can be used for both comedy and club nights.
