New limited-edition rum released for Ron Zacapa

A new limited-edition blend has been launched by Diageo GB as part of the ultra-premium rum brand Ron Zacapa.

Reserva Limitada 2015 has been blended using handpicked reserve rums aged between six and 24 years by master blender Lorena Vasquez.

The rums have been matured in oak casks that previously held robust American whiskeys, delicate sherry and wine made from Pedro Ximénez grapes and then exposed to new delicate flavours through ageing for two years in re-charred barrels.

At 45% ABV, it is the third annual limited edition from Ron Zacapa, part of the Diageo Reserve Brands portfolio. In retail, the 70cl bottle is recommended for sale around £82.

Its launch comes at a time when super-premium rum is growing by 24% in volume in Western Europe, according to IWSR figures. Ron Zacapa accounts for 53% of this market.

Like all Ron Zacapa rums, Reserva Limitada 2015 is made from the sugar canes of the volcano-shadowed Guatemalan lowlands, with an ageing process that takes place above the clouds at 2,300 metres above sea level. Traditional hand-woven petate bands adorn each bottle.

Deep mahogany in colour, with an intense amber glow, the liquid carries scents of vanilla, with hints of chocolate, apricot, wood and caramelised fruits. In taste, Reserva Limitada 2015 is at first, exotic, structured and complex. Completely different to other rums in the same range, the taste develops with chocolate and vanilla, giving the rum an exquisite balance, with notes of fruit and toasted almonds.
