A new bar is set to open in a Grade II-listed property in the centre of Wakefield in West Yorkshire.

Young entrepreneur Catelinn Burdon has taken on the 10-year lease of the premises in Westgate which was formerly bar and nightclub The KooKoo Cage and, before that, Boomerangs.

She plans to open it as Oscar’s Bar, initially just serving drinks but it may later extend to a food offering. It covers the ground and first floor, with a main bar, a dance floor, a DJ booth and space for 50 covers, with a private lounge for events on the first floor.

The leasehold for the property, which is currently empty, was handled by specialist business property adviser Christie & Co, with nil premium as the asking price.

Sam Ashton, business agent at Christie & Co, said: “Situated on such a busy licensed circuit and a weekend social scene popular among the locals like Westgate in Wakefield, it is no surprise that this empty unit did not last long on the market.

“I have no doubt the business will be a successful drinks spot amongst other competitors in the area. An affordable food offering could soon be introduced to the business model at a later stage once it becomes more established in months to come.”
