New range of The Deveron single malts from John Dewar & Sons

The Deveron whisky

John Dewar & Sons is to release the first expressions in The Deveron range of single malts, produced at the Macduff distillery on the northern coast of Aberdeenshire.

They are The Deveron 10 Years Old, The Deveron 12 Years Old and The Deveron 18 Years Old, which have never been released before. They will be available from October 2015.

They will be the latest releases from Bacardi’s whisky company John Dewar & Sons, under the banner of Last Great Malts which features new single malts from lesser-known distilleries such as Craigellachie, Aultmore and Aberfeldy. It is the last of the company’s five malt whisky distilleries to release new products after the arrival of expressions from Royal Brackla this month.

Each bottled at 40% ABV, they are being released in selected markets around the world. The Deveron 12 Years Old and The Deveron 18 Years Old will be available in the UK but The Deveron 10 Years Old will be available only in France.

Located near the mouth of the River Deveron, Macduff distillery is best known for producing the Glen Deveron range of whiskies. It is comparatively modern, starting production in 1960, and has mainly supplied whiskies for blends.

Emanating from five small copper pot stills and unusual horizontal condensers that gently coax extra character from the spirit, The Deveron is an approachable dram with a tang of coastal air about it. The distillery is set up for a light, fruity spirit full of apple tones and nutty notes.

Stephen Marshall, Bacardi’s global marketing manager for single malts, said: “The final one. We’ve done it and it tastes great. People underestimate the quality of whisky that can be made at a comparatively modern distillery. This is really top-notch stuff.”

Tasting notes composed by John Dewar & Sons

The Deveron 10 Years Old
Down by the shoreline where spindrift flies, in taverns hoachin’ with coastal folk,
Liquid rites share this tasty trove of toffee, crisp apples and creamy oak.

The Deveron 12 Years Old
When billows break and haar ghosts in, then haste ye home or some bit warm,
Unwind with toasted grain and apples, seaborne spice; calm from the storm.

The Deveron 18 Years Old
Made where the big river meets the endless brine, in any weather, drookit or clear,
Delve in fruity depths where nutty notes are stowed; a dram for blether and fireside cheer.
