A new ultra-premium tequila, designed for sipping in elegant champagne flutes, has been introduced in the UK.
Tequila Enemigo – meaning “enemy” – comprises two expressions, 89 Añejo Cristalino and 00 Extra Añejo, which have been aged in customised new American oak barrels.
The perfect serve is in long-stemmed champagne flutes, either chilled with a squeeze of lime or at room temperature. The narrow bowl of the flute amplifies the aromas and funnels the liquid to the tip of the tongue to ensure the flavour is savoured.
Tequila Enemigo, which has already won the Masters Medal at the Global Luxury Spirits Masters for 00 Extra Añejo, is made from 100% blue agave and is individually checked for sugar concentration before heating – a process that uses only leftover agave rather than fossil fuels.
Produced at one of Mexico’s most environmentally friendly distilleries through a mix of traditional and modern methods, it uses spring water that has passed through a volcano. Both expressions come in 70cl bottles at 40% ABV.
Max Davies-Gilbert, co-founder and director, said: “From the absolute beginning, the focus of our tequila has been to deliver the purest experience by merging tradition with modernity, from production all the way through to consumption.
“Serving tequila in long-stem glasses is the final coup d’état for our work and we couldn’t be more excited to be bringing this approach to London, along with a product that we believe truly deserves such elegance.”
Available from The Whisky Exchange, the first on-trade accounts include StreetXO, 5 Hertford Street, Mr Fogg’s, Isabel and Bart’s.
Enemigo 89 Añejo Cristalino is traditionally aged for over a year, resting in custom-made new American oak barrels. The dark liquid is then removed and placed through a state-of-the-art filtration system, turning it clear again. This process retains the complex flavours obtained through ageing but creating a smooth tequila. In retail, it has the recommended price of £60.
Enemigo 00 Extra Añejo is rested for over three years, taking in the deep flavours and colours from the American oak barrels. Produced in only limited quantities, it has the recommended price in retail of £145.
