New US alcoholic root beer enters UK

Not Your Father’s Root Beer

A modern take on US-style root beer has been introduced in the UK through a partnership with Bedford brewer Charles Wells.

After its successful launch in the US last year by brewer Small Town Brewery, Not Your Father’s Root Beer is now available in England and Wales, in 355ml bottles at 4.5% ABV.

Inspired by the centuries-old “gruit” brewing tradition, it is made with botanicals and spices such as sarsaparilla, Madagascar vanilla, oak, wintergreen, liquorice, honey, citrus and mint in the brewing process.

Genna Burchell, marketing manager for world beers at Charles Wells, said: “No pun intended but Small Town Brewery and Charles Wells have similar roots with founders and ancestors who were naval captains that later went on to become brewers.

“Not Your Father’s Root Beer is an exciting addition to our portfolio and we’re excited to help Small Town Brewery give British beer drinkers a chance to try this traditional US favourite that we’re sure they will love.”

Small Town Brewery founder Tim Kovac added: “Charles Wells’ long history of quality and innovation is a perfect fit with our own company values. They’ve successfully introduced new varieties of beer to brand new markets, making them an excellent partner to help translate the success of our botanical brews across the Atlantic.”

It follows Charles Wells’ new partnership with Michigan brewer Founders Brewing Co to distribute its award-winning Founders All Day IPA, available in kegs, 355ml bottles and cans across the UK. A wider range of Founders seasonal beers are expected to be added to the Charles Wells portfolio in the near future.
