New Walkabout set to open in Manchester’s Printworks

Walkabout Lichfield - 24/9/2015

Intertain is continuing its new strategy of expanding its Walkabout bars by taking over the former Henry J Bean’s site in Manchester’s Printworks.

Refurbishment work on the city centre venue is set to begin on November 2 with plans to open in December – the fourth new Walkabout bar this year after Solihull and Lichfield (pictured) in the Midlands and Brighton.

Intertain is investing over £485,000 in the 600-capacity venue which will provide 60 permanent bar, kitchen and management jobs. The Printworks is home to other bars and clubs as well as an Odeon IMAX cinema – Henry J Bean’s was one of the original tenants when the complex opened 15 years ago.

Intertain chief executive John Leslie, said: “We’re delighted to be opening our brand new Manchester venue this December. The Printworks is a fantastic entertainment hub and we’re excited to introduce our customers to our ‘new style’ Walkabout.

“Following on from the success of our recent openings, we now have a fantastic platform from which to build for the future.”

The closure of Henry J Bean’s in Manchester marks the American-style bar and grill brand’s exit from the UK after it first arrived in Kings Road in Chelsea in 1984. At one point, it also had sites in Camden and Wimbledon in London, Bristol and Birmingham. The concept continues to operate through franchises overseas through the UK-based Kornicis Group.

The new Walkabout will be home to a Reef Bar for the main bar area, where linked screens will show undersea and beach footage to give the impression of being in a Great Barrier Reef-like paradise.

The venue will also boast a variety of pre-bookable booths and private areas for parties, meals, club nights and live music, along with plush VIP areas and a state-of-the-art sound and light system.

Pre-bookable front row seats will be available for all major televised live sports events which will be shown on giant new projection screens, and multiple HD TVs in line with Walkabout’s reputation as a venue for sports on the high street.

It will have a high focus on food, offering customers light bites, main meals, sharing dishes and party plates. This will be combined with a new drinks menu that includes wines, beers and cocktails inspired by the character and beauty of Australia.
