It is a batch of bourbon that has been aged in American oak and then finished in barrels made from maple wood as well as casks that formerly held oloroso sherry and ruby port.
Each whiskey is placed into one of these casks, which are then blended together. Bottled at 47.2 per cent ABV, only 500 cases are available.
Woodford Reserve master distiller Chris Morris said: “This year’s Master’s Collection brings together a unique combination of exotic wood – maple – and fortified wine – port and sherry – in a complex interplay of flavours unsurpassed in our craft.
“The batching ratios of the three finishing barrels were painstakingly chosen so that no one character dominated the final product. Instead, Four Wood is so balanced that the palate effects of each of the four woods plays a discernible role in the final flavour presentation.”
The oloroso cask adds notes of walnut and caramel to the whiskey while the maple wood and ruby port bring hints of maple and baking spice and notes of rich berry fruit. Combined together, these characteristics create a flavour that is warm and full-bodied, leading to a smooth and sensuous finish with a nutty aftertaste.
Ffion Jones, brand manager for super-premium American whiskeys at Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands, said: “Woodford Reserve has long produced award-winning whiskey with a legacy of craftsmanship and innovation. The acclaimed Master’s Collection showcases the best traits of Woodford Reserve whilst also celebrating the inherent brand characteristics.
“There are “5 Sources of Flavour” that are present in every bourbon: water, grain, fermentation, distillation and ageing, and each member of the Master’s Collection represents experimentation with one or more of these flavour sources.
“The distinctive flavour is sure to excite fans, whilst the bottles will look fantastic on any back bar, making Woodford Reserve Four Wood a sure hit with whiskey connoisseurs and bartender collectors alike.”
The Master’s Collection whiskeys are released periodically at the master distiller’s discretion, limited in quantity and bottled in packaging inspired by the copper pot stills of the Woodford Reserve distillery.
Woodford Reserve Four Wood joins the twin pack of Woodford Reserve Rye Whiskeys, the Maple Wood Finish, the Four Grain, Sonoma-Cutrer Finish, Sweet Mash and Seasoned Oak offerings.
