New York dominates Tales of the Cocktail awards


Dead RabbitNew York City dominated this year’s global Spirited Awards at Tales of the Cocktail, including three international awards for The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog (pictured).

The Dead Rabbit in Lower Manhattan won the titles of world’s best new cocktail bar and world’s best cocktail menu while co-founder Jack McGarry was named international bartender of the year.

World’s best hotel bar went to the NoMad Hotel in Manhattan while Clover Club in Brooklyn won two awards, best high-volume cocktail bar and best American cocktail bar. Julie Reiner, the co-owner of Clover Club and New York’s Flatiron Lounge, was named best bar mentor.

The title of world’s best cocktail bar went to Drink in Boston, and the award for best drinks selection was won by Canon Whiskey and Bitters Emporium in Seattle. American bartender of the year was Charles Joly of The Aviary in Chicago.

The Helen David Award for Lifetime Achievement went to the Maestro, Salvatore Calabrese, currently heading Salvatore’s Bar at Playboy Club in London.

Tony Conigliaro of London’s 69 Colebrooke Row, Zetter Townhouse and Grain Store won the award for best new book with Drinks, while best cocktail writing in a publication went to the UK-based DiffordsGuide.com. The award for best cocktail writer went to Gaz Regan.

Best new product was Fords Gin, created by Simon Ford of The 86 Co with Charles Maxwell, master distiller at Thames Distillers in Clapham, south-west London.

Jacob Briars, who heads global advocacy and training at Bacardi, won the award for best international brand amabassador.

Other bartenders and bars in London made it through to the finals including Simone Caporale of the Artesian Bar at London’s Langham hotel, Callooh Callay, Nightjar, the American Bar at the Savoy, Zetter Townhouse and global rum ambassador Ian Burrell
