Italian bartender Nicoló Bolognino triumphed in the global final of Flor de Caña’s Rum Frontiers Challenge, held in the rum’s home of Nicaragua.

Bartenders, including UK national winner Ryan Rhodes from Dusk in Aberdeen, were challenged to re-create their original winning cocktail and a new recipe with fresh local fruits, inspired by the volcanoes of Nicaragua.

With the spectacular islets of Granada and the Mombacho volcano as backdrop, Nicoló (pictured below) competed against winning bartenders from other countries including Peru, Australia and the Czech Republic.

The global final’s judges included Adrián Juárez, vice-president of the International Bartenders Association (IBA), Mauricio Solórzano, global ambassador of Flor de Caña, Ricardo Méndez, Flor de Caña’s ambassador in Chile, and Richard Albano, Flor de Caña ambasador in México.

As winner of the competition, Nicoló, who works at Al Migliarese restaurant in Tropea on the southern Italian coast, will see his cocktails promoted around the world by Flor de Caña.
