Omar whiskies from Taiwan to be launched in UK

Omar whisky Taiwan

A whisky brand from Taiwan is being launched in the UK, adding a new player to a market dominated by the award-winning Kavalan.

Leading drinks company Cellar Trends has introduced two expressions of Omar whisky on behalf of European distributor Les Whiskies du Monde.

Omar Bourbon Cask is aged 100% in ex-bourbon oak casks and Omar Sherry Cask in ex-sherry casks. Both have ABV of 46% and are non-chill-filtered. “Omar” means “amber” in Gaelic.

They are distilled by Nantou Distillery, owned by the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation (TTL), which has produced the Omar range of single malts since 2008.

The whiskies, previewed at The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show in London last week, are being launched into the on-trade and specialist retailers after the success of Taiwan’s Kavalan in international whisky awards.

Caroline Pihoue, brand manager for Omar at Cellar Trends, said: “Omar whiskies are for whisky explorers as well as connoisseurs of single malt. The brand brings new options to discover for fans of new-world whisky, as there are only two whisky distilleries in Taiwan.

“We predict strong demand for Omar Sherry Cask in particular, as the brand’s intense flavour qualities have won strong accolades, and it has a competitive price point.

“Omar will be an excellent addition to Cellar Trends’ whisky portfolio, and we are very excited to distribute a brand which is already attracting such considerable interest.”

Omar Bourbon Cask won a Silver Outstanding medal at IWSC 2016, Bronze at ISC 2016 and Bronze at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards while Omar Sherry Cask won Silver Outstanding medal at IWSC 2016, Silver at ISC 2016 and a Silver medal at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards. The recommended prices in retail for them are £63 and £67 respectively.
