A new low-ABV, probiotic water kefir drink called Agua De Madre is being rolled out to the UK on-trade.
Agua De Madre co-founders Nicola Hart and Sam Clark set out to find a healthy ‘live’ drink, and after much research, came across water kefir, a fermented probiotic drink with a history dating back over 2000 years.
While not a new discovery, water kefir is relatively unknown by consumers. Like many fermented drinks, it packs a wide range of health benefits, namely aiding digestion thanks to its 25 billion live probiotic cultures.
Nicola went on to develop her own recipe, and in early 2019 moved production to Hackney, with bespoke equipment and a small expert team with a background in winemaking.
Made in small batches, Agua De Madre uses the ‘Tibicos Mother Culture’, originally discovered on the pads of the Mexican Opuntia cactus, as the catalyst to ferment organic sugar, organic fruit and ginger.
The result is a naturally sparkling 1.2% ABV drink with a “delicate citrus profile and hint of sweetness”.
Agua de Madre can be enjoyed on its own, as a mixer or in cocktails. For a refreshing long drink, it is recommended serve over crushed mint and ice, or in champagne flutes for a low-ABV alternative to sparkling wine.
Nicola said: “People have become much more discerning and need an exciting and interesting alternative in the form of an adult drink that has the ritual of drinking without the high alcohol content.
“The spirit of the ‘Mother Culture’ is at the heart of everything we do and we will be bringing this to life by celebrating inspiring ‘Madres’ as the brand continues to grow.”
