Patrón Tequila names Perfectionists competition winner

Yeray Monforte Patrón Perfectionists 2018 winner

Bartender Yeray Monforte from Dr Stravinsky in Barcelona, Spain has been crowned the global winner of the Patrón Perfectionists cocktail competition.

In 2018, Patrón Tequila went on the search for ‘perfection’ across six continents and 17 countries. Bartenders were tasked with creating a cocktail that reflects and harnesses the passion, precision and care that goes into each bottle of ultra-premium Patrón Tequila.

After winning the Spain finals of the competition, Yeray (pictured) travelled to Hacienda Patrón in Jalisco, Mexico, to compete in the semi-finals on 23 January 2019.

Yeray’s cocktail Wind (recipe below) secured him a place as one of the top six in the Grand Final the following day and ultimately his win.

Yeray said: “What an incredible journey – I am so thrilled with this victory and the resonating title in the industry as well as a great reward for the commitment and the passion that led me through the research and creation of my perfect Patrón cocktail.

“From submitting my entry to competing in front of the judges during the final, the Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition has been an unforgettable experience.”

At the Grand Final, Yeray was joined by fellow finalists Óscar Olvera from Mexico, Makina Labrecque from Canada, Peter Hannah from the USA, Chloé Merz from Germany and Mitsuhiro Nakamura from Japan.

Nicole Sykes from Satan’s Whiskers, London, represented the UK in the semi-finals with her creation The Godfather’s Affinity, a floral and sweet interpretation of Mexico’s popular Paloma.

Nicole said: “The Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition been a great journey of discovery and learning, enabling me to further develop my craft. Representing the UK and its amazing bar scene has been an incredible honour.

“During the competition, I met some of the world’s most amazing bartenders and being here at the Hacienda with these new friends and to see the variety of each of the Patrón Tequila serves has been really inspiring.

“Patrón Tequila has built a great community within the industry, and from the affinity and complicity of this community, I drew the inspiration for my cocktail. I congratulate all of my fellow finalists, and above all Yeray for his well-deserved win!”

Matthew Sykes, director, international marketing for Patrón Spirits International, added: “The pursuit of perfection is core to the Patrón brand and is a concept that resonates through the bartending community.

“The calibre of the cocktails entered into the competition is testament to talent within the global community of Perfectionists.
