The search for Patrón tequila’s Margarita of the Year has been won by a top bar in Mexico after months of public voting.
The Verde Margarita is a twist on a Margarita from José Luis Leon, lead bartender of Limantour in Mexico City. It combines Patrón Silver with simple ingredients found in the popular Jugo Verde – a green juice enjoyed by Mexico City locals. See below for the recipe.
It was chosen from twists on a Margarita created by seven of the world’s top bartenders, each inspired by the flavours and culture of their home towns.
People were invited to vote for their favourite, supported by the MargaritaOfTheYear.com website which showcased beautiful imagery and cocktail videos to encourage people to try the Margaritas for themselves.
Talking of his cocktail, José Luis León said: “The Verde Margarita is a flavourful tribute to Mexico created to add a taste of Mexico City to the classic Margarita recipe.
“Green is representative of life and freshness, which I wanted to bring to life through my creation. The elderflower balances out the vegetal notes of celery with light floral tones, complemented by a sugar-salt rim.
“I tried to think out of the box when I created The Verde Margarita, and I am overjoyed that the experimentation has paid off and I have made Mexico proud.”
Lee Applbaum, chief marketing officer of Patrón Spirits International, added: “Whilst Patrón didn’t invent the Margarita, we certainly have perfected it. By inviting experimental and exciting bartenders like José Luis León to be a part of the campaign, we are consistently continuing to innovate with this serve.
“The 2018 search for the Patrón Margarita of the Year revealed some incredibly imaginative interpretations of the classic cocktail and it’s exciting to see so much engagement.
“From flavours of lychee and celery, to plum and sherry, all of the seven Margaritas were great contenders but it is clear to see why José Luis León’s Verde Margarita triumphed. The zesty and refreshing Verde Margarita is the perfect cocktail to enjoy in the summer heat.”
Verde Margarita by José Luis León
30ml Patrón Silver tequila
20ml Patrón Citrónge Orange liqueur
20ml Elderflower liqueur (such as St-Germain)
15ml Fino sherry
15ml Agave syrup
1 Lime wedge
1 Celery stick
1 Pinch salt
Celery spear and edible flower for garnish
Sugar, sea salt and celery salt rim
Rim a highball glass with a mix of sugar, sea salt and celery salt. Combine ingredients in a blender with crushed ice and blend until a slushy consistency is achieved. Pour contents from blender into glass. Garnish with a celery spear and edible flower – before a well-deserved siesta.
