Portobello Road Gin partners top bars for London Cocktail Week

portobello Soyer's Nectar

Three bars will be offering special cocktails made with Portobello Road Gin to celebrate London Cocktail Week in October.

The Blind Pig in Soho will be offering a drink evoking a song from London-set musical Mary Poppins with the name Gin Quininey, Gin Quininey, Gin Gin, Yuzu. It combines Portobello Road Gin, yuzu cordial, green tea, malic acid and tonic bitters, carbonated in house and served in a capped pop bottle with a custom-designed label.

At the Portobello Star in Notting Hill, the original home of the gin brand, the cocktail will be Soyer’s Nectar (pictured). This is a recreation of the first-ever blue drink, which was immensely popular among refined Londoners of the 1840s and 1850s. Originally created by legendary French chef Alexis Benoit Soyer, the Portobello Star’s cocktail is made to a secret recipe devised by Portobello Star owner Jake Burger.

At The Savoy, The American Bar will be serving a Martini made with a gin custom-made especially for the hotel by the team behind Portobello Road Gin using the 30-litre still, nicknamed Copernicus the Second, at the Ginstitute above the Portobello Star.

The Savoy Gin was developed with Declan Mcgurk, bar manager at The American Bar, and his team, and features the same botanicals as Portobello Road Gin – juniper, coriander, angelica, orris, liquorice, bitter orange and lemon – with the addition of bergamot peel and fresh mint. It is made with spirit distilled from English wheat.

The limited-edition gin will be served in the 5pm Martini with The Savoy’s bespoke bitters and a dry vermouth created exclusively by Roberto Bava, whose company makes Cocchi vermouths.

The cocktails at The Blind Pig and the Portobello Star will be available for £4 for anyone with a London Cocktail Week wristband. The American Bar’s Martini will be normally priced and available while stocks last.

London Cocktail Week runs from October 6 to 12. For more information and details on wristbands, visit www.londoncocktailweek.com.
