Premium rums from Seychelles to be launched in UK

takamaka rums

A range of rums made in the Seychelles, Takamaka Rum, is set to be launched into the UK on-trade by luxury spirits distributor Highball Brands.

The rum was created by brothers Richard and Bernard d’Offay, who were inspired by their grandfather’s recipe for rhum arrangé – infused rum. Using the name of a region of the Seychelles, they have harnessed the bounty of their island home to create rums made with high-quality, local ingredients.

The range available in the UK through Highball Brands will be White Rum, Spiced Rum, the aged Extra Noir, coconut-flavoured Coco Rum and extra-matured St André sipping rum.

Takamaka Rum is made with water collected from the Vallée de Mai for its high mineral content and
sugarcane exclusively grown for Takamaka by a cooperative of independent family farms. It is then blended with molasses-based rums.

The distillation and blending process is overseen by master distiller Dave Boule, which sees the rum go through a copper pot still before a final column still for purity. The rums are matured in American and French oak as well as second-use bourbon barrels, resting in the tropical climate of the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean east of Africa.

Takamaka White Rum, at 38% ABV, has a fresh and clean aroma with a soft, creamy character and natural aromatic undertones.

Takamaka Spiced Rum, also at 38% ABV, has a vanilla and caramel aroma, with local spices providing deliciously smooth top notes on the palate. A pure finish is coupled with lingering notes of vanilla and caramel.

Takamaka Extra Noir, at 38% ABV, uses selected aged rums from new French and old-use bourbon oak. This rum has a dark caramel appearance and aroma, with a full-bodied elegance, and a long, warming finish.

Takamaka Coco Rum, at 25% ABV, is made by infusing Takamaka White Rum with pure coconut extract, described as a “grown-up and sophisticated take on flavoured rums”. A strong coconut aroma is complemented by hints of vanilla and coconut on the palate, without being overbearingly sweet.

Takamaka St André, at 40% ABV, is a sipping rum, aged for eight years and gently filtered to preserve the flavours. It has a clear amber appearance and aroma of vanilla and spice. The delicate flavour of vanilla mixes with marmalade and oak, along with a touch of spice, for a smooth, luxurious and lingering finish. It comes in a one-litre bottle while all the others are in standard 70cl bottles.

Highball Brands believes that, unrestrained by the history and heritage of the rum category, Takamaka provides a fresh and alternative option to the on-trade.

Highball Brands director Fabrice Limon said: “Takamaka Rum complements our portfolio of exciting, luxury spirits with its unique provenance and fresh approach to a category typically steeped in history and tradition. We are looking forward to building the brand in the UK.”

Bernard d’Offay, who is exports director of Takamaka Rum, added: “We are extremely pleased to
be working with Highball Brands to launch our brand in the UK. Their expertise within the industry will be integral in introducing us as a fresh, youthful and alternative rum offering to the on-trade.”

Highball Brands was founded in 2016 by Fabrice with Barrie Wilson – both experienced in the premium drinks industry – to specialise in delivering “the most luxurious and exciting portfolio to the trade with impeccable customer service through every touchpoint”.
