The team behind Pizza Pilgrims restaurants have launched their own limoncello into the wider trade through UK distributor Instil Drinks Co.
Pococello has been developed by restaurant founders Thom and James Elliot with Chase Distillery in Herefordshire, using single-origin Amalfi lemons from Italy.
They originally created the 29% ABV limoncello for their own two London restaurants, introducing it last year as Sohocello and making it available to other bars and restaurants in the area. While the recipe remains the same, it has a new name using the Italian for “little” to reflect that it is made in small batches.
Thom said: “We knew we had a fantastic product but the demand even overwhelmed us and we soon realised that we needed to find a distribution partner. We wanted somebody we could trust with the brand and who would be able to develop distribution in the right way and Instil is just that for us.”
Instil managing director Mark Johnson said: “We are delighted to be appointed the distribution agency for such a young and exciting spirit like Pococello. It’s a fun yet premium brand as well as a great-tasting liquor, and the Instil team can’t wait to drive refreshing lemon serves throughout the summer of 2015.”
Suggested serves include with Fever-Tree Tonic over ice with a slice of orange or for adding a twist to an Amaretto Sour. At last night’s launch in Soho, it was also available dispensed from slushy machines as a refreshing frozen granita dessert drink.
Thom and James scoured Italy in a Piaggio Porter van to find the perfect lemons for making their very own limoncello, locating them in the hills above Amalfi.
With their vivid yellow and perfumed skins, the lemons used to make Pococello are packed with essential oils. Hand-peeled and macerated in Chase Distillery’s Herefordshire potato-based spirit for seven days, every drop of the lemon oil is extracted, giving the drink its trademark cloudiness, signalling a premium limoncello.
Various activities are planned for Pococello over the summer including exhibiting at Taste of London in Regent’s Park from June 17 to 21 and Soho Food Feast on June 13 and 14.
The Instil Drinks Co, part of Bibendum PLB Group, also distributes brands such as Crystal Head Vodka, Plantation Rum, Fiorente Liqueur, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao and Cognac, Boca Loca Cachaça, Citadelle Gin, 10 Saints Lager, Coopers Ales, Fratello Liqueur, Luigi Francoli Grappa.
