Ron Santiago de Cuba™ announce the winner of their inaugural Casa Del Daiquiri competition, the Platánode Fuego from Mr Fox in Croydon. The competition sees professional bartenders compete to demonstrate their knowledge of Ron Santiago de Cuba™ by creating a bespoke Daiquiri.

Inspired by Cuban sunset beach barbeques Yaw Asante, from the independent bar in Surrey Street Market, created the Platáno de Fuego, using flavours of caramelised plantain and scotch bonnet chillies to create their take on the Daiquiri. The judges said of Mr Fox’s winning serve: “A really creative drink, with unusual ingredients. Spicy and sweet: perfectly balanced. The team is amazing; the head mixologist was so passionate, and I loved the use of plantain for the garnish.”

First prize is the opportunity to attend the Bar Convent Berlin trade fair in October 2023, with flights & accommodation included, a bespoke influencer case with Ron Santiago de Cuba Extra Añejo 11-year-old, as well as having their winning serve inducted into the Casa del Daiquiri Hall of Fame.

In second place was Bill Protheroe from Hawksmoor Air Street with their Jennings-Whey Daiquiri, who receives a bespoke influencer case with Ron Santiago de Cuba Extra Añejo 11-year-old. Third place was Giuseppe Quartararo from Nightjar, Shoreditch with theHabana Vieja and fourth place was Gabriele Staltari from Trailer Happiness with the The Underdog, who both receive a personalised bottle of Ron Santiago de Cuba Extra Añejo 11-year-old.

Casa Del Daiquiri by Ron Santiago de Cuba™ is an international collective of world-leading bartenders from cities such as Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Athens, Milan, Berlin and London, who have been selected to create their own modern twist on the original Daiquiri recipe. The platform aims to find the best Daiquiris around the world. Every creation was available in each bar on the lead up to International Daiquiri Day on 19th July.

2023 saw the first editionof the Ron Santiago de Cuba™ Casa del Daiquiri Competition, which consisted of three months of engagement with the bartending community in each qualifying local market. In the UK, the competition ran in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, including a recruitment period of bartender training and live competition challenge, which were formally judged.

The top 4 cocktails were selected in a semi-final showdown by Ron Santiago de Cuba™ Brand Ambassador, Tommy Cole, Global Rum Ambassador, Ian Burrell and Time Out Food & Drink Editor, Leonie Cooper.

Ron Santiago de Cuba™ partnered with Time Out to promote the top 4 cocktails across Time Out channels, which were then entered into a final vote, which saw judges from Time Out visit the selected bars to sample the cocktails, where they were scored against a set criteria to determine the winner.

In addition to Casa del Daiquiri, Ron Santiago de Cuba™ Daiquiri Week took place from 17th-23rd July around the world, enabling consumers to enjoy the creations of the Casa Del Daiquiri bartenders in participating bars. 87 bars participated in the UK this year. Consumers enjoyed 5,700 Daiquiris across Daiquiri Week, an increase of 128% from last year, signifying the growing appreciation of Ron Santiago de Cuba™.

Celebratory rum days such as these are gaining pace, unsurprisingly, as rum has exceeded the £1 Billion in sales per year mark, meaning it now has a 13% share of the overall spirits category[1]. This growth is driven by the premium and above sector with consumers seeking brands which are rich in authenticity and provenance such as Ron Santiago de Cuba™.

Ron Santiago de Cuba™ is traditionally recognised as the highest expression of Cuban rum making tradition from the South-East of the island so, it is not only the perfect choice for a balanced Daiquiri, but it also shares geographical history with its place of birth, in Daiquiri itself.

Regardless of its origin, it is undisputed that the Daiquiri is a timeless classic, which has transformed over time to become one of the world’s most beloved cocktails – and currently the number one, best-selling rum cocktail in the world’s top bars.
