Rum competition offers prize of month in Colombia

HechiceraA competition has been launched by Colombia rum La Hechicera offering bartenders the chance to win a trip to live and work in the Caribbean country for a month.

Two winning bartenders from the UK will visit the Colombian capital of Bogotá as well as the fashionable city of Cartagena where the rum is produced.

They will enjoy a bespoke programme hosted by the Riascos family who launched the aged rum in the UK last year – the brand’s first market before international roll-out.

It will include working in Bogotá’s top bars, with a salary and accommodation provided during the month. They will also blend their own rum with the master blender of La Hechicera.

The first stage of the Wanderlust Colombia cocktail challenge asks professional bartenders to register interest in entering the competition via the Ron La Hechicera page on Facebook by October 31. Click here.

Details will be revealed before judging takes place in February 2014. The prize trips will be taken later in 2014.

Laura Riascos, co-founder of the rum, said: “We look forward to welcoming winners to our beautiful home city. The UK was the launch market for La Hechicera one year ago in November 2012. We would like to thank the bar professionals whom we have worked with so successfully by sharing the exotic work and lifestyle and contemporary culture and history of Colombia.

“The programme we are planning for our winners will be hugely exciting, and we hope they will find it memorable for many years to come.

“Beyond the city, the beaches of Colombia’s Caribbean coast and the adventurous natural landscape will certainly enhance the experience of the brand.”

La Hechicera blends rums aged between 12 and 21 years in American white oak casks, using its own version of the solera method. Its smoothness and mellow flavour comes naturally from the barrels, with no rounding out with additives or sugar.

The bottle features an illustration inspired by the abundant nature of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada, including praying mantises hidden in the landscape.

The rum is now stocked in leading bars, restaurants and clubs in London such as Boisdale, Hix, Mr Fogg’s, The Ritz, The Box and 5 Hertford Street and is gaining listings in other cities such as Manchester.
